The winner of Miss Universe Ghana 2012, Gifty Ofor on Friday, April 12 embarked on a reading and colouring exercise at the Adamorebe Anglican Basic School, off the Oyibi Road in the Greater Accra Region.  As part of the exercise, the beauty queen donated books, pencils, erasers and sharpeners to the KG 1 and KG 2 pupils of the school.
Miss Ofori, a nurse at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, took the children through a reading and spelling lesson before engaging them in the book coloring activities. She also gave them lessons on good hygiene, with particular emphasis on the need to wash their hands after play, visiting the toilet etc before eating.
Gifty Ofori was received by the administrative and teaching staff of the Adamorebe Anglican Basic School with warm hearts as the children welcomed her and her team with poetry recitals, singing and dancing. The headmistress of the school expressed her gratitude for the visit and the intent to help inspire the children to learn hard and become worthy citizens of the state in future.
“Quality education was always my focus during the Miss Universe competition and from my research; I found out that reading in the basic schools has reduced drastically. I added colouring to it in order to make the reading program more interesting and fun for the kids. This program is to help our young ones, our future leaders to develop the habit of reading,”  Gifty Ofori explained her reading and colouring project.
She also called for more support from corporate bodies and individuals in providing basic learning materials such books, pencils, colouring pencils, erasers and sharpeners to deprived schools such as the Adamorebe Anglican Basic School. She was particularly grateful to Mr Sylvester Lartey of Sly Laideesco Enterprise in James Town, who gave a good discount on the books she presented to the school.
She also added “Visiting the Adamorbe Anglican Basic School, I couldn’t believe that there are children who still learn under trees. I believe we can do better for our future leaders. In one accord let’s help support this cause.”
