10 REASONS WHY BULGARIA IS A FANTASTIC STUDY DESTINATION FOR AFRICAN YOUTH

Published

on

For most prospective international students, the decision as to their destination of study has gotten increasingly complicated over the last few years. Soaring tuition fees and cost of living for international students, navigating complex visa application procedures, unfriendly immigration policies, etc. have made traditionally attractive countries such as the UK, US, Canada, and the powerhouses in the EU increasingly less appealing, and for most prospects, these countries are completely out of reach.

Yet, opportunities abound in many other countries, which may not be quite well known to most of our young people. In this piece, I’ll review why Bulgaria, a member of the EU and, starting in March 2024, will be joining the Schengen Zone, offers immense promise for prospective international students, especially from our part of the world. Let’s dig in.

  1. High-quality education. Bulgarian universities are highly regarded for their academic excellence. They offer a wide range of courses in English, and many of their graduates go on to successful careers in business, government, and academia.

Bulgarian universities have a strong faculty of experienced and qualified professors. Many of the professors have PhDs from top universities around the world. Most universities boast modern facilities that are well-equipped for teaching and research. It is thus not surprising that the standard of education in Bulgaria is world class and comparable to any in other parts of Western Europe or the United States. It is thus no wonder that Bulgarian Degrees are recognized across the entire EU as well as in the UK.

Furthermore, Bulgarian universities have strong international partnerships with universities around the world and especially across Europe. This allows students to participate in exchange programs and collaborate on research projects with international colleagues. As a member of the EU, Bulgarian universities are very active in the famed Erasmus program. This program allows students to move to universities in other parts of Europe to continue their studies.

  1. Affordable tuition. The cost of studying in Bulgaria is much lower than in many other countries, especially in Europe. This makes it an attractive option for students who are looking to save money on their education. The reason for the affordable cost is that many Bulgarian universities are heavily subsidized by the government. This means that the government covers a large portion of the cost of tuition, which helps keep it affordable for students. What’s more, there are a number of scholarships and grants available to international students. These can help offset the cost of tuition and living expenses even further.
  2. English-taught programs: Many Bulgarian universities have offered English-taught programs for the last 20 years. This means that students can study in Bulgaria without having to learn Bulgarian.
  1. University and program diversity: There are several Universities and a large variety of programs available to prospective students who want to study in Bulgaria. For instance, Bulgaria has medical schools in Stara Zagora, Plovdiv, Varna, and Sofia. Additionally, there are technical universities in Sofia, Varna, and Gabravo that provide courses in technical, mechanical, and aeronautical engineering, computer science, etc.

A number of other universities offer management, business informatics, economics, marketing, anthropology, philosophy, tourism, food technology, mining, architecture, and ICT.

  1. Strong Economic Prospects: International students in Bulgaria have the opportunity to work and earn a living while studying. This allows many African students, especially, to be able to cover some of their key academic and living costs from their wages. Also, the strategic location of Bulgaria and its membership in the EU have led to significant economic growth over the last decade or so. Four key sectors stand out prominently: technology, tourism, manufacturing, and agriculture. Of all these, technology is perhaps the most interesting. High-profile tech firms like IBM, HP, and Microsoft have recently opened offices in Bulgaria to take advantage of the country’s friendly business climate and skilled workforce.

There are about 10,000 ICT businesses, and 70% of them export their goods and services. Sofia has established itself as one of Europe’s most developed tech ecosystems, and Bulgaria has acquired a solid reputation as a software manufacturer. More and more foreign companies are opening global call and service centers in Bulgaria as they move their operations from India to Bulgaria. All these strong economic activities mean international students in Bulgaria can easily tap into these opportunities as students, graduate workers, or entrepreneurs.

  1. Flexible Student Visa Policy: It is relatively easy to obtain a Bulgarian study visa.

You must apply for a Bulgarian student visa (Visa D-type) once you have received an acceptance letter from a Bulgarian university. You must provide proof of enrollment in a Bulgarian school or university, a passport and two copies of your passport photos, a return ticket, medical insurance, and evidence that you can afford or have already paid at least one semester full tuition fees. Documents should be translated and notarized in Bulgarian.

  1. A safe and welcoming environment. In a world that is growing increasingly unsafe and insecure, your safety as an international student in a foreign country should be paramount in deciding your ultimate study destination. Fortunately, in this regard as well, Bulgaria excels.

Bulgaria has a low crime rate compared to other European countries. In 2020, the crime rate in Bulgaria was 2,100 per 100,000 people. This is much lower than the crime rate in countries like the United States (4,200 per 100,000 people) and the United Kingdom (2,500 per 100,000 people).

Bulgarians are generally friendly and welcoming especially  to international students. The Bulgarian government provides support to international students who are studying in Bulgaria. This support includes scholarships, grants, and counseling services. The government also provides support to international students who are experiencing discrimination or harassment.

  1. A rich history and culture. Bulgaria has a rich history and culture that span over 6,000 years. The country has been inhabited by many different cultures, including the Thracians, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and Bulgarians. This has resulted in a unique and diverse culture that is attractive to international students.

Today, Bulgaria is a modern country with a rich history and culture. The country is home to many historical sites, including the ancient city of Plovdiv, the Rila Monastery, and the Boyana Church among others. Bulgaria also has a vibrant cultural scene, with many museums, theaters, and art galleries.

The rich history and culture of Bulgaria make it an attractive destination for international students. Students who study in Bulgaria can learn about the country’s unique culture and history, and they can also experience the warm hospitality of the Bulgarian people.

  1. A beautiful and affordable country to live in. Bulgaria is a beautiful country with a mild climate. The cost of living is relatively low, making it an affordable place to live and study.

The cost of living in Bulgaria is much lower than in many other European countries. This is especially true when it comes to key costs like housing, food, and transportation.

The cost of housing in Bulgaria is much lower than in many other European countries. For instance, a private modern apartment in the city centre of Sofia is about 400 EUR per month. Rent in other Bulgarian cities is usually cheaper (e.g. around 300-350 EUR in Plovdiv or Varna). This is much lower than the average rent in cities like London or Paris.

Similarly, the cost of food and transport in Bulgaria is also much lower than in many other European countries. A typical meal at a restaurant in Bulgaria costs around €10. A monthly pass for public transportation in Sofia costs around €20. This is much lower than the cost of food and public transportation in London or Paris.

  1. A gateway to other European countries. Studying in Bulgaria can be a great way to gain access to other European countries. Bulgaria is a member of the European Union. From March 2024, the country will be admitted partially into the coveted Schengen area. This new status will offer students in Bulgaria increased access to tap into the enormous economic opportunities across the EU after graduation.

Bulgaria is located in the heart of Europe, making it easy to travel to other countries in the region. Students who study in Bulgaria will have the opportunity to explore the rich history and culture of the Balkans as well.
