Yes it’s that time of the year and it’s time for me to do my predictions for the Ghana Music Awards. This year is too close to call and awards could go anywhere because like I keep saying, there is very little to choose between the top artists. However I will try to make my predictions based on what I think the public would vote for, and where the Board and industry people may sway towards …and well my own biases.
The most keenly contested category would the rap/hiphop/hiplife gongs with a clear-cut contest between Sarkodie and EL; and possible upsets from the dark horse, Pappykojo. Dancehall/Reggae categories would almost be a walkover for Stonebwoy, while Bisa Kdei leads the pack for highlife. Again last year I wasn’t too connected with the gospel music scene but I feel SP Kofi Sarpong would lead that category.
So with that said, now the question is which of these artistes would win the general categories such as artiste of the year, song of the year and album of the year? Well, here it goes!!!
Artiste Of The Year
I will narrow it to Sarkodie, Bisa KDei, Stonebwoy and EL. Sarkodie’s superstar quality can always make him win artiste of the year although this year he didn’t have the usual big hits. Stonebwoy had a good year too but I feel the odds are against him winning the title back to back. So that leaves me with EL and Bisa Kdei. I would pick Bisa Kdei because he had a good year with at least two smash hits, he was featured on many other hit songs, and when it comes to performing across the country only a few Ghanaian artists could compare with him in the past year. Also I feel a win for Bisa would be more significant than a win for the others. It is about time highlife music won the big prize again! Highlife music has not been able to compete and attract mass appeal like Bisa Kdei was able to do, since the peak days of Ofori Amponsah.
Vodafone Most Popular Song Of The Year
I will narrow this to Skolom – VVIP featuring Sena Dagadu, Mansa – Bisa Kdei, Go Higher – Stonebwoy
Ekikime – Wisa featuring Luther, and Susuka – Kofi Kinaata. Although Wisa and Kofi Kinaata both had big hits they may not have the star power like the others. And if I’m pushed to choose between VVIP, Bisa Kdei and Stonebwoy, I would say Bisa Kdei will win this with Mansa.
Album Of The Year
Mzvee’s Verified album was really cool with some good hits but I will narrow this category to Mary – Sarkodie, Elom – EL, and Breakthrough – Bisa KDei. Again based on which album had the most number of major hits, I will pick Bisa Kdei for this one. But I think the winner for Album of the year will alternate with the winner for artiste of the year. So if Bisa wins this then Artiste of the year may go to EL and vice versa.
Highlife Artiste Of The Year
I may be setting myself for failure by giving all my predictions so far to Bisa Kdei but this is one category he cannot lose.
Afro-pop Song Of The Year
Tough category this year and for the first time I will rule out Fuse ODG – Only . I will narrow it down to
R2bees – Gboza featuring Davido, Edem – Nyedzilo featuring Reekado Banks, and E.L – Mi Naa Bo Po. I think Edem will win this one.
Reggae/Dancehall Artiste Of The Year
This would be a fight between Stonebwoy, Jupitar, MzVee and Blakk Rasta. But I think the star power of Stonebwoy will win this one for him!
Hip-life/Hip-Hop Artiste Of The Year
Based on mass appeal I will narrow it to Pappy kojo, Sarkodie, VVIP and E.L. But I think Sarkodie will inch past the competition slightly and pick this one.
Best Collaboration Of The Year
One of the most difficult categories to call this year. But I will narrow it down to VVIP – Skolom featuring Sena Dagadu, Pappy Kojo – Ay3 Late featuring, Sarkodie, Wisa – Ekikime featuring Luther and Donzy – The Crusade featuring Kofi Kinaata. Based on the sheer style and how Donzy and Kinaata complemented each other on The Crusade, I think they will win this one.
Record Of The Year
This award could go anyway since it is technical and not for the popularity of songs. But I feel the uniqueness of R2bees – Concert Party could win this for them.
Hip-life Song Of The Year
I will narrow it to Donzy – The Crusade featuring Kofi Kinaata, Atom – Ye Wo Krom, Wisa – Ekiki Me featuring Luther and VVIP – Skolom featuring Sena Dagadu. I think as the oldest hiplife act with the most star power in the group, VVIP may knick this one.
Highlife Song Of The Year
This category hasn’t been this competitive in a long while. I will narrow it to Aka Blay – Take Away featuring Cabum, Becca – Hwe, Bisa Kdei – Mansa, R2Bees – Makoma, and Kofi Kinaata – Susuka. I feel the board may favour Aka Blay while the public favour Bisa Kdei more. But I think Bisa Kdei will grab this one!
Reggae/Dancehall Song Of The Year
I will narrow it to Blakk Rasta – Serwaa Akoto, Stonebwoy – Go Higher, and Jupitar – Fire featuring Stonebwoy. But I feel Stonebwoy will win this.
Best Male Vocal Performance
I will narrow it to Mugeez – Concert Party and Akwaboah Jnr. – Mewu (by Sarkodie). But I think this is Akwaboah’s year.
Best Female Vocal Performance
Will Efya gain back her title with SarkCess Story, or will Adina – Boom Boom Beat, Irene Logan – Me Do Wo, or Yaa Yaa – Dumb Drum deny her the title? I feel strong about Yaa Yaa for this year.
Hip-Hop Song Of The Year
Though to call. I will narrow it to E.L – All Black feat. Joey B & Pappy Kojo, Flowking Stone – Fire Bon Them, Omar Sterling – Ninety Ninety, and Pappy Kojo – Ay3 Late feat. Sarkodie. But I think E.L will win this one.
Best Rapper Of The Year
Hmm, another rap category! I will narrow it to E.L – King Without A Crown and Sarkodie – Hand To Mouth. But based on the popularity of songs, I think Sarkodie will win this one.
Best Music Video Of The Year
I will narrow it to Yaa Yaa – Dumb Drum
Edem – Girlfriend and Preachers – Crazy For God. I think Yaa Yaa may win this.
Best Group Of The Year
I will narrow it to VVIP, R2Bees and Keche. But I feel VVIP will steal it from R2bees.
Producer Of The Year
I think it will be a race between Bisa Kdei/Kaywa – Mansa, E.L – Mi Naa Bo Po, and Kin Dee – Susuka. But I think Bisa Kdei and Kaywa will win this.
Best New Artiste Of The Year
I think Kofi Kinaata is the winner for this
Gospel Song Of The Year
I am picking SP Kofi Sarpong – Hour By Hour featuring Joyce Blessing for this one.
Gospel Artiste Of The Year
Again I think SP Kofi Sarpong has this.
Songwriter Of The Year
This tends to go to deep lyrics and well composed songs so I am thinking it will be between Kofi Kinaata – Susuka and Obrafour – Nkontompo. I think Obrafour will steal this from Kinaata.
African Artiste Of The Year
Should be a race between the ‘small boys’ Wizkid
and Korede Bello. And I think Wizkid will knick this.
