A 26-year old Ghanaian Graduate Researcher in Architecture studying at the Southeast University, China, has been selected together with 24 other awardees from 21 countries across the world for the 2019 Green Talents Awards in Germany.

The event, spearheaded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, under the patronage of Minister Anja Karliczek, awards young international researchers annually for their efforts in making societies more sustainable in any area of studies.

Ghana’s only representative, Georgina Esi Takyi-Annan’s research, focuses on green and sustainable design approach to achieving affordable housing in developing countries and West Africa.

Ms. Takyi-Annan dedicates herself to the question of how sustainable building design concepts can be successfully implemented in developing countries.

In the past, she has worked on the maximization of natural lighting in students’ hostels through the use of design concepts.

In her current research, she intends to incorporate green concepts and sustainable architectural designs into affordable housing units in developing countries.

She believes the availability, sustainability, and affordability of housing for people from all social classes play a significant role in the economic, social, and health development of every country, and that sustainable and green building design also contributes to reducing the negative impacts that buildings have on the environment and on the health of occupants.

The purpose of her research is to make housing affordable for all social classes through the implementation of green concepts and sustainable building designs.

With this approach, she attempts to simultaneously address these challenges pertaining to housing deficit, lack of affordable housing and the negative impact of buildings on the environment, in West Africa and other developing countries.

Against this background, Georgina will conduct a study on the concept and challenges of using green concepts to provide affordable housing in developing countries and integrate the study results into improvement strategies.

Why Georgina Esi Takyi-Annan was selected

The jury had the impression that Georgina is pursuing her goal with her heart and soul, stressing that her research could help to raise awareness for sustainable architecture and also help to tackle some of the challenges that come with the implementation of green buildings.

In addition, the weighting of the valuation was positively influenced by the fact that Georgina has already participated in many significant sustainability research projects.

About the Green Talents Awards

Every year, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) hosts the prestigious ‘Green Talents – International Forum for High Potentials in Sustainable Development’ to promote the international exchange of innovative green ideas.

The winners come from numerous countries and scientific disciplines and are recognized for their outstanding achievements in making our societies more sustainable.

Selected by a jury of German experts, the award winners were granted unique access to the country’s research community ahead of the final event on Thursday, October 24, 2019.

This year, a high-ranking jury of expert scientists selected 25 up-and-coming researchers from among 837 applicants and 97 countries, which marks a new high score of applications received.

For the first time ever, winners from Cameroon, Lebanon, Morocco and Papua New Guinea are among the chosen awardees.

The 2019 awardees have undergone a two-week Science Forum, leading them to different hotspots of sustainability science in Germany.

The tour started in western Germany taking the young researchers to the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence in Saarbrücken, the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security in Bonn, RWTH Aachen University, and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy.

They also visited Germanwatch, a non-governmental organization based in Bonn, as well as the company called Covestro, who will be an exhibitor at K 2019, a significant trade fair for plastics and rubber in Düsseldorf.
