ghana 59th independence day-cropFrom our food, to our music, our sense of humour, religiousness and ways of doing things, there are some things that you just gotta love about Ghana. As we celebrate 59 years of independence, I have compiled 59 of the things that we love about Ghana from subsmissions on my Facebook page to my personal observations. So here it goes!

I will start with my personal observations and close with what people on Facebook say they love about Ghana.

1. We just have to say something – Ghanaians love to talk and often comment on things they have no idea about but comment just for comment sake. I once remember somebody called on a radio program to say (and I paraphrase)  “if the planned increase in utility tariffs are implemented then we are going to die oh”. Then the host said ‘but the increases have been implemented for a while now and you have been paying it, so how come you haven’t died”. The caller then replied ” eii then I didn’t know oh”.

2. We love to bring people down – The recent case of Jay Folley and Lexis Bill allegedly mocking Abraham Attah is a classic case of the kind of people we are. Someone wrote on his Facebook that he’s heard that these radio personalities were mocking the young actor, and even without knowing what the radio presenters had said people started attacking Jay Folley and Lexis Bill, saying they were jealous of Abraham Attah and even insulting them. They accused the radio presenters of trying to pull down the young actor, when in fact they were rather looking for an opportunity to pull these radio presenters down. Even when the audio for what Jay Folley had said came out, they failed to appreciate the harmless nature of what he said about Abraham Attah – yet you will find out from what most Ghanaians love about Ghana is our sense of humour.

3. We have more hours in a day – Yes Ghana has more than 24 hours in a day so we take our time in doing things. We have no respect for time, we go to meetings and attend event at our own pace. Event organisers start events when they want and not when they tell you it would start, and events like award ceremonies can last for more than 5 hours.

4. We pretend we don’t have stars or celebrities – I don’t know the number of times people have asked is he a star? Is she a celebrity?  Well my answer can be read here: Yes, we have celebrities in Ghana.

5. We don’t like to read – Ghanaians generally don’t like to read, and if they read they don’t always fully comprehend what they read. Yet Ghanaians would still go ahead and comment on what they failed to read or didn’t fully comprehend when the read – as though they were professors on the topic.

6. Everything in NPP or NDC – Discussions on radio and TV about national issues (or what should be national issues) are always done by politicians. No wonder the the HIV/AIDS cases that went down the era of JA Kufuor is different from the HIV/AIDS that increased in the Eastern Region under the NDC.

7. Lovely beaches – I am not a beach person but this one is listed based on what foreigners who visit Ghana often ask me about. Whenever my friends visit Ghana, they ask or show interest in going to the beach because they have heard it is fun.

…and now what you guys are saying

8. Maguan Adjebu – I love the way Ghanaians can twist very serious issues into very funny jokes.. we are generally happy people. #iloveGh

9. Ace Ranking I love Some annoying questions Ghanaians usually ask; 1. They walk to you eating and still ask “are you eating” 2. They see you walking out of the door and still ask “are you leaving” 3. You return from work and they still ask you “are you back” 4. They wake you up from bed and still ask “are you sleeping”

10. Johnny E’ke Walker what I like about Ghana is that it’s only here where we have a talk show on our telenovelas and Ghanaians call to wish a character a speedy recovery….God bless Ghana

11. Ace Ranking I admire the love Ghanaians have for God ..thats how come a Ghanaian can excuse God before answering his call in the middle of worship

23. EkOw Akom-mensah I love Dr. kwame Nkrumah…..just that. and I want the truth be told about him. we all as Ghanaians must come to together and write about his good deeds… its unfortunate that our typical attitude of mediocrity and jealous of someone who does something better than us or his approach of doing things rather than how we would have gone about it renders us hating and talking evil about that person….. lets not forget anyone who hate you will bring out and over emphasizing just the little shot comings of a person , making it look evil in the eyes of everyone who they meet…. Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln during their time and to the” declaration of independence” were worse off, because of some of theiraactions/inactions and policies they made, which saw the south south west of America being treated like third class citizens even with the white ; or one party state but yet you will never hear an American speak ill about them… All the good things about them are rather highlighted and studied in schools which has brought about every American being patriotic…. I have traveled extensively to all the 10 regions and most of the districts in Ghana, and there’s nowhere I didn’t see Nkrumah’s brain work… The African man of the millennium

24. Tairou Askan What I love about Ghana is how religious we can be…Been looking for a tilt bed for my home therapy but can’t find one to purchase so my mechanic advised me to do a locally made so he brought me a professional welder for me to explain into details. The welder showed up in his work clothes but what he thought was best to do was to convince me to go see his pastor and he ignored his work and was insisting with his pastor proposal. I had the design of the equipment and I was trying to show to this professional welder but he ignored his profession n was insisting in convincing me to see his pastor.
