A fun experience with the Cherry Tiggo electric car from Solar Taxi

The concept of electric cars is spreading all over the globe and Ghana has not been left out.  SolarTaxi Limited, a Ghanaian startup company that harnesses the energy of the sun to provide clean and affordable transport, has available a number of these electric vehicles in Ghana now for purchase and lease.

The company’s aim is to reduce both carbon emissions and the cost of mobility; delivery and transport services while also creating employment opportunities for unemployed youths.

I had the opportunity to experience the Cherry Tiggo 3xe 480 EV SUV for a day and I absolutely loved it. Although I didn’t drive it myself, the expression on the face Yaw, my driver and the conversations he brought up throughout the day about the car, proved that he totally enjoyed driving it.

As a passenger, I equally enjoyed the experience. It was a smooth ride and the fact that there was no noise of sparking when the car was started, made it feel strangely special. My first experience in an electric car was in the Netherlands, when I took an electric cab from my hotel to the airport in Amsterdam.

The Cherry Tiggo 3xe 480 SUV has the following specs:

53.6 kWh battery good for a range of about 401 km (NEDC)

95 kW motor producing 280 Nm of torque

Top speed of 151 km/h

Dimensions of the Tiggo 3xe 480 EV SUV are 4200 mm long, 1760 mm wide, and 1570 mm high.

The wheelbase of the Tiggo 3xe 480 EV SUV is 2555 mm, and it has a ground clearance of 150 mm.

The Tiggo 3xe 480 EV SUV comes standard with 17-inch wheels. The curb weight of the Tiggo 3xe 480 EV SUV is 1515 kg,

SolarTaxi was launched in 2018 by Kumasi Hive through a partnership with MasterCard Foundation. It seeks to create environmental, social, and economic Impact in African communities by harnessing the renewable energy of the sun and using it to power vehicles.

SolarTaxi provides locally assembled solar-powered electric motorcycles, tricycles, and cars, as well as access to charging stations. The company has established solar hubs to power its vehicles due to the unreliable nature of the national grid in Ghana. This in the long run goes with the company’s goal by increasing the use of renewable energy.

SolarTaxi employs drivers for its Taxi and courier services, including many from its Female Driver Training Academy, which educates women on how to operate and maintain the vehicles.

SolarTaxi also has an all-female engineering hub that assembles its solarbikes and cars.

SolarTaxi has completed 3000 trips covering 30,000Km in the past 11 months. SolarTaxi’s fleet includes over sixty motorcycles, seven  tricycles and twenty  cars in operation in Accra, Tamale, Takoradi and Kumasi. There are SolarHubs as charging stations in 4 major cities across Ghana.
