A ‘Grande’ end to Coachella 2019

I wrapped up my first Coachella experience when Weekend 2 ended with many highlights on Sunday.  Sunday started bright and early with Kanye West’s Sunday Service at the Camping site, but I was too today from Saturday’s event to join it. Plus, I had seen him perform the previous night on Kid Cudi’s set. So that was enough Kanye for me!

I arrived at the festival grounds few minutes to 4pm, just in time to catch a bit of ‘African Giant’, Burnaboy’s set. He was full of energy and delighted the diverse crowd that had gathered around the stage. I hope he finally managed to prove that he is an ‘African Giant’ .

This time around, I had found my way around the festival grounds and I had circled out which shows I was going to watch, although occasionally, I bumped into some sets and enjoyed it equally.

Pusha T proved his lyrical dexterity and I was particularly impressed with the way fans rapped along to his positive lyrics. Although some fans were disappointed that he didn’t surprise them with an appearance from Kanye West, it didn’t take anything away from his set.

Zedd and Alessia Cara

German-Russian producer/DJ, Zedd known for some of the biggest hits in the dance-pop scene, blessed fans with live renditions of top 10 hits “The Middle” and “Stay” featuring Maren Morris and Alessia Cara respectively.

Both came out in bright highlighter yellow to stand out against Zedd’s ruby red visuals, and both brought even more excitement to the fan favorites.

One of my favourite from the day, Khalid was simply fantastic to see on stage.

The 21-year-old performer brought out John Mayer to the delight of the crowd. During his surprise appearance, John and Khalid performed their collaboration “Outta My Head”. He also brought out 6lack and Ty Dolla $ign to perform ‘OTW’.

Then finally came the headliner for this year’s Coachella, Ariana Grande, in what has been termed a successful second attempt after technical issues dogged her Weekend 1 Coachella set.

She performed a host of her hit songs and surprised the crowd when she invited Justin Bieber. Bieber performed his hit song, ‘Sorry’ and announced that he has an album coming soon.

It was my first time seeing Ariana Grande perform; and although I know not less than 5 of her hits, I enjoyed her show and the crowd reaction to songs I didn’t even know made the experience priceless for me. I only later saw online that she was hit with a lemon, but that doesn’t take anything away from her night! Awesome!!!

Ryan Ofei Sings Open The Heavens On Limitless Worship: Accra

Published

Ryan Ofei

Ryan Ofei’s voice sounds like God made him solely to praise His name. Thus, it should come as no surprise that Ryan turned down football scholarships in favour of ministering the word of God through his music. In a short period, the Ghanaian/Canadian worshiper has built an incredible repertoire that can only be proof of God’s grace upon his life. Ryan Ofei’s singles (‘No Limits’ & ‘Jehova’) as well as his debut solo project (David’s Heart) have touched souls across continents and led to tours in Europe, North America & Africa. Ryan’s contributions to Maverick City Music, a group he joined in 2021 as a songwriter & performer, has led to several Grammy nominations and a Grammy win. UK Rapper, Stormzy quite recently co-signed Ryan by performing a cover of Ryan’s “Jehova” song at Montreaux Jazz Festival.  ‘Limitless Worship: Accra’is Ryan Ofei’s second solo project and an ode to the Ghanaian roots through which God has blessed his life.

‘Limitless Worship’ opens with the uplifting ‘Hail The Name’ where Ryan Ofei’s voice beams with joy as he tells you to “lift up your eyes, look at the king, isn’t he beautiful?” A question that needs no answering. The chorus of voices that join him to sing “Yahweh” in the hook only heighten the feeling of abundance and beauty that fills you when the song starts. On ‘Amen (Wo Awie)’ Ryan praises God for fulfilling His promises to his servant. Ryan weaves his lyrics beautifully in English and closes it off in Twi on the hook. Ryan and his chorus of beautiful voices belt “Wo Awie, asem a wo kaa yɛ no, bɔhyɛ a wo hyɛɛ me no” which loosely translates to “the promises you made me, you have fulfilled them.” Ghanaian gospel stalwart Joe Mettle also lends his voice in praise with Ryan. More than halfway into the song, it switches into a powerful proclamation of unwavering belief in the promises of God which is also reflected in a switch in instrumentation that shows the intentionality with which Ryan creates music. With 5 songs and clocking in at around 30 minutes, Limitless Worship is a spirit filled showcase of Ryan Ofei’s growth in God and in musical ability. It is a wonderful listen and guaranteed to bring listeners closer to God.

‘Limitless Worship: Accra’ was recorded live in Ghana. It is Ryan Ofei’s first live recording and features elements of African worship blended with contemporary Christian music.
