Angola Leila Lopes 001Miss Angola, Leila Lopes was crowned Miss Universe 2011 Monday  night at the Credicard Hall in Sao Paulo, Brazil.The pageant named Ukraine’s Olesya Stefanko as first runner-up, Brazil’s Priscila Machado second runner- up, and Luo Zilin of China third runner-up.

Other awards were also handed to Miss Montenegro for Ms. Congeniality and Miss Sweden for Miss Photogenic. Contestants from 89 nations on six continents spent the past three weeks in Sao Paulo, trying to learn samba dance steps, visiting impoverished children and kicking a football around for cameras as the globe’s biggest beauty contest is held in Brazil for the first time.

Miss Universe 2011The pageant was hosted by NBC “Today” anchor Natalie Morales and the Bravo network’s Andy Cohen. Judges were celebrities including Connie Chung, supermodel Isabeli Fontana and Indy race car driver Helio Castroneves and Philippine international singer Lea Salonga.
