Bijukumar Damodoran to preside over BRIDGE of ARTS short film competition



Bijukumar Damodoran, a three – time laureate of National Film Awards of India, will preside over short film competition of the IV International Film and Sport Festival BRIDGE of ARTS. Bijukumar Damodoran also known as  Dr.Bijuis an Indian director, scriptwriter and producer.He is a three-time laureate of National Film Awards of India, prize winner and participant of leading film screenings. His films were shown at film festivals of Cannes, Montreal, Shanghai, Cairo, New York, Telluride and others and were awarded in Iran, Russia and Australia. His films shot mostly in Malayalam touch upon issues of environmental protection. «It is not by accident that Bijukumar Damodoran is the jury foreman. This year we have signed the partnership agreement with International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) which is a top leading film festivals of India and traditionally pays a lot of attention to Russia. In 2017, for example, IFFK presented Alexander Sokurov’s film retrospective and granted him an award for outstanding achievement in cinematograph. Negotiations resulted in the decision to show Indian films at special program of BRIDGE of ARTS IMFF this year and to present a Russian sector at Film Festival of Kerala in upcoming December», – Fyodor Krat,BRIDGE of ARTS general producer, commented. Three films will be included into BRIDGE of ARTS 2018 special Indian program:

  • Garden of Desire directed bySri Sanju Surendran, adebut experimental work awarded atKerala State Film Awards 2018.
  • Teen Aur Aadha directed byDarya Gaykalova, a debut film, coproduction ofIndia and Ukraine. The film was screened at a number of festivals and received several awards and Best Debut Film at Los Angeles Independent Film Awards in particular.
  • Birds with Large Wings directed by Bijukumar Damodaran was screenedin Genevawithin framework of United Nations Organisations environmenatal protection program and it was nominated for UNESCO awards.

Being a homoeopath by profession, Dr.Bijustudied cinema art on his own. Debut film Saira, 2005 brought him fame. It was screened at multiple festivals including Cannes (the work opened ‘World Cinema’ retrospective program in 2007), San Paolo (competition), New York, Eilat, Brussels, Hyderabad and others. In Russia it was shown in 2006 at Kazan film competition ‘Golden Minbar’.
  • Veettilekkulla Vazhi/TheWayHome, 2010 brought Dr.Biju the first National Film award (top award in India). The film became the best in Best Film In Malayalam category. Two of his films Perariyathavar/Names Unknown, 2013 and Valiya Chirakulla Pakshikal/BirdsWith Large Wings, 2015 were chosen as the Best Environmental Films. The film Birds… was screened in Geneva within framework of United Nations Organisations environmenatal protection program and it was nominated for UNESCO awards.
Dr.Biju was a jury member of the National Film Award (2012), International Film Festival in Iran ‘Fadjr’ (2012), those of Kerala (2011, India) and Pune (2018, India). In 2015 he worked as a member of Indian Oscar committee (it is he, who decided what Indian film will be Oscar nominated as the Best Foreign Film). At the present moment he is finishing work at his film in English Painting Life and getting ready for shooting a new film in Malayalam.  ]]>
