Carnival City will host a gala on November 27 to benefit Usizolwethu, a school in Daveyton, South Africa for children with severe mental impairments. Scheduled to perform at the gala is soul singer and guitarist, Wax and house DJ Mo Flava of Y FM (South Africa).

Usizolwethu School for learners with Special Educational Needs (LSEN) was established in 1984.  The aim of the school is to accommodate learners with a range of learning disabilities who cannot be accommodated in mainstream schools. These range from mental impairments to autistic spectrum disorders, behavioral disorders, cerebral palsy, physical disabilities, hearing inabilities, and partial sightedness.

The main objective of this gala is to raise funds to buy a school bus to ferry learners to and from school, to build a kitchen for preparation of their meals, and to build a school hall for skills development.

“The learners come from previously disadvantaged communities and from very poor families. The school therefore, has to provide learners with transport, as well as breakfast and lunch on daily basis,” explained the school Principal Mmereki Mpshe.

Because of this, Usizolwethu has to depend on sponsors and long term partnerships with corporate partners so that it can continue to build a future for children with severe learning impairments.
