Black Stars player, Christian Atsu’s benevolent offer to pay for a  jailed grandmother to undergo a life-saving surgery  touched the lives of many Ghanaians. However, the said woman died days later.

A report came out that the 62 year old grandmother, Mama Theresa who was currently serving a 10 year jail term for possessing marijuana was on the verge of death following a serious health complication that needed surgery.

The  Crime Check Foundation, a correctional and reintegration Non-Governmental Organization in Ghana got wind of the situation and sought for public support for the old woman which caught the attention of the Black Stars player who offered to pay for the full cost of her surgery and recuperation.

Mama Theresa, however, could not make it as she died in the course of the surgery.

In an interview with Crime Check Foundation’s Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng, the Black Stars player expressed his sadness about her death. He also expressed worry on the issue of neglect of prisoners by their family members when he was informed Mama Theresa’s family had refused to come for her body. He called for an attitudinal change.

The talented left-foot Black Stars player is reportedly undertaking major prison reforms in the Prison system of Ghana. He is offering second chances to minor offenders who are serving jail terms as a result of their inability to pay small amount of fines. He does this by paying for these fines while The  Crime Check Foundation, a correctional and reintegration Non-Governmental Organization in Ghana works to reintegrate them back into society without stigma and relapse into crime again.
