Oprah Winfrey who is a Co-Producer in the upcoming musical remake of The Color Purple has described it as a full circle moment.

Oprah who starred in the original directed by Steven Spielberg made the comment during an exclusive online Q&A session with selected media personalities ahead of the official release of The Color Purple trailer last week.

She told moderator, Kelley Carter : “I can’t tell you what a full circle moment this is. I remember saying to Steven Spielberg, while we were filming it in 1985.  I went to him and said, “you know, people are saying that I’m gonna be famous. So you might wanna put my name on the trailer and on the poster.” And he said, “your name can’t go on the poster because your lawyer already worked that out and you have a most favoured nation clause. I didn’t even know what that was. So it’s just such a joy now to see my name wasn’t on the poster, but it is on the trailer for the re-imagined bold new take on The Color Purple, almost 40 years later. There is a God okay?”

“So the reason this moment is so important is because for as long as there is a need for self-discovery, self-empowerment, as long as there’s a need for victory in someone’s life, as long as there is a need for people to know what it feels like to be loved up and to be made full and whole through somebody else’s love, there will be a need for The Color Purple. And so we have our iteration now coming out on December 25th and I believe that in the future, this story just grows and it never grows old.”

(“Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Beauty and the Beast: A 30^th Celebration”), Halle Bailey (“The Little Mermaid,” “Grown-ish”), Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (“King Richard,” “If Beale Street Could Talk”), and Fantasia Barrino (in her major motion picture debut).

The screenplay is by Marcus Gardley (“Maid,” “The Chi”), based on the novel by Alice Walker and based on the musical stage play, book (of the musical stage play) by Marsha Norman, music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. The executive producers Alice Walker, Rebecca Walker, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Carla Gardini, Mara Jacobs, Adam Fell, Courtenay Valenti, Sheila Walcott and Michael Beugg.
