MY FATHER BUILT THE WORLD11

My Father Built The World is a film reimagining the moment the British Black Panthers were conceived in Brixton of 1968 from the perspective of lifelong civil right activist, David Udo and his daughter Idara Udo.

The film finds Obi Egbuna (creator of the British Black Panthers, as well as a successful playwright) dwelling on the death of Martin Luther King, announced the same month the Panthers were created. When David enters, bewildered, processing the news himself an idea comes to life… Either side of this meeting between two close friends in the late summer of 1968, is punctuated by voice-over and footage of Idara Udo looking at us, narrating the context of her father’s past and future on either side of the film’s events.

This is personal. David’s story was unknown to me until Idara gave me one of his books with audio between her and David, as well as taking me to the Black British Archives in Brixton where she proudly pointed out images of him. Through research I learnt more about Black History than I ever learnt in school, and this was all David’s real life. Black people in the UK don’t get educated like this, and education was David’s number one passion. He himself wasn’t educated about slavery growing up in colonial Nigeria. As a young half-Nigerian person myself, who attended boarding school, there are many parallels between myself and David. I understand his plight on a deep human level, life in the UK, Idara’sin an LGBT sense and has the experience of Nigeria ingrained in his bones.” ~ Writer/director, Levi Eddie Aluede

David Udo

A founding and core member of the British Black Panthers in the 1960s, Director of the Martin Luther King Foundation in the 70s, Director of Southwark Race relations in the 80s, at the centre of major race events including the murder of Stephen Lawrence in the 90s, the trial of Olive Morris, New Cross Fires and the Mangrove Nine are just a glimpse of his life. Once a preacher, still a prolific writer and always a civil rights activist. David grew up in colonial Nigeria and moved to the UK in the 60’s. When Stokely Carmichael hit the stage in 1967 and he met Obi Egbuna, their relationship was marked by their joint creation of the UCPA and British Black Panthers, the two first ever British black power groups, everything changed and the world was opened up. Since, he has educated, preached, helped and fought for the Black British community. This is precisely why his story must be told. Change never stops, freedom, rights and a just world are in constant flux even now, and the memories of what our parents fight for, is still in the air.

Egbuna participated in events organized by the Caribbean Artists Movement, and in 1966 his play Wind Versus Polygamy was performed at the World Festival of Negro Arts in Dakar, Senegal, where the Pan African Players and the Negro Theatre Workshop (founded in London by Pearl Connor) represented the United Kingdom. He became a pioneer of the Black Power movement in Britain,  forming the Universal Coloured People’s Association (UCPA) – “the first avowed Black Power group in Britain in August 1967, following Stokely Carmichael’s visit” – and speaking at a major anti-Vietnam war rally in October that year. The Africa Center
The Africa Center in partnership with Global Citizen, Climate Action Platform Africa (CAP-A), and the Government of Kenya will host a discussion between Kenyan President William Ruto and World Trade Organization Director General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on Climate Positive Growth, Investment, and Trade Frameworks for an African Led World.
The conversation will take place on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at 9am to 11am EST at The Africa Center at Aliko Dangote Hall, located at 1280 5th Ave in New York City.
The conversation will be live-streamed at theafricacenter.org, and on The Africa Center’s Facebook and YouTube pages. The program will be available on Global Citizen’s YouTube page following the event.
Uzodinma Iweala, CEO of The Africa Center said: “We are thrilled and honored to have President Ruto and WTO D.G. Okonjo-Iweala join us for this critical conversation at The Africa Center. Recognizing and investing in Africa’s leadership on climate change is not just a matter of environmental responsibility, it’s a testament to the continent’s resilience, innovation, and its unwavering commitment to a sustainable future. Africa isn’t just adapting to the impacts of climate change, it’s ready and willing to help shape the narrative of our planet’s future. I firmly believe that by acknowledging and harnessing this leadership, we not only protect our planet but also elevate the global stage for African voices, wisdom, and solutions in this fight.”
Caralene Robinson, Chief Growth Officer at Global Citizen said: “Africa is where climate change, poverty and inequity are having the greatest impact. By 2050, a quarter of the world’s entire population will be African and it will be the world’s youngest continent. The moment is now to unlock opportunity, catalyze inclusive growth to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. Since 2018 Global Citizen has run several campaigns across the continent and we look forward to further expanding our efforts over the coming year. We are proud to be co-hosting this important discussion with H.E. President Ruto of Kenya and WTO D.G. Okonjo-Iweala, highlighting how the new climate positive global trade frameworks can enable Africa to become a leader in green innovation and technology.”
James Mwangi, Founder of CAP-A and Founder and CEO of Africa Climate Ventures said: “Climate action in Africa is not just possible and potentially highly competitive, it is indispensable: Africa needs to be net negative to achieve net zero global ambitions by 2050. Conversely, Africa needs climate action as a critical driver for economic transformation and job creation at scale. A transition to a green economy will not happen of its own accord. It requires concerted effort and focused leadership. We are honored to bring together perspectives from H.E. President Ruto and WTO D.G. Okonjo-Iweala on the investment case for Climate Positive Growth.”
