From Bel-Air to Halo to Yellowjackets, the 12 best international series on Showmax in Apri

Published

on

First seasons of Halo, Bel-Air, Yellowjackets, Somebody Somewhere; Ray Donovan: The Movie ends series
HALO | Binge two episodes now, with new episodes every Friday, first on Showmax
One of Rotten Tomatoes’ Most Anticipated Shows of 2022, Halo brings one of the highest-grossing gaming franchises of all time to the small screen, 21 years after the epic Xbox military science fiction game first launched.
Already renewed for a second season, Halo follows Master Chief (Pablo Schreiber from American Gods and Orange is the New Black), a cybernetically enhanced super-soldier, as he defends humanity from an alien threat known as the Covenant. MTV Movie Award nominee Natascha McElhone (Californication) is Dr. Halsey, the brilliant, conflicted and inscrutable creator of the Spartan super soldiers, and Jen Taylor reprises her voice role from the game as Cortana, the most advanced AI in human history, and potentially the key to the survival of the human race.
With South African blockbuster director Jonathan Liebesman (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) among the show’s directors, Halo set a new record as the most-watched series premiere globally on Paramount+, with CBR hailing the series as “a compelling, gorgeous sci-fi adventure.”
BEL-AIR | Binge now
Executive produced by controversial 2022 Oscar winner Will Smith, the brand-new Fresh Prince-inspired series, Bel-Air, is full of surprises. It’s set in modern-day America, but it’s also a prequel to the hit ‘90s sitcom. And it’s a drama, bringing a whole new take to Will’s life-altering journey from the streets of West Philly to the gated mansions of Bel-Air.
Newcomer Jabari Banks stars as Will, alongside the freshly-imagined Banks family, portrayed by Adrian Holmes (Arrow, Supernatural), Cassandra Freeman (Inside Man), singer-songwriter Coco Jones, Akira Akbar (Captain MarvelGood Trouble), and Nigerian-American actor Olly Sholotan (Run Hide Fight) as the way-too-cool Carlton, with Jimmy Akingbola (Arrow) as Geoffrey.
One of Rotten Tomatoes’ Most Anticipated Shows of 2022, Bel-Air is co-created by Morgan Cooper (the fan whose viral YouTube trailer reimagining The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as a drama inspired the whole project), Black Reel nominee Malcolm Spellman (The Falcon and the Winter SoldierEmpire), and T.J. Brady (The ChiThe 100).
Empire Magazine calls the series, “A bold reimagining that maintains the essence of the original show while exploring important social themes from an authentic, Black perspective.”
YELLOWJACKETS | Binge now
Melanie Lynsky (Don’t Look Up) won Best Actress: Drama at the 2022 Critics’ Choice and Best Actress: Horror at the 2022 Critics’ Choice Super Awards, where Yellowjackets was also named Best Horror.
Lynsky co-stars alongside Oscar nominee Juliette Lewis (Natural Born Killers), Emmy nominee Christina Ricci (The Matrix Resurrections), and multi-award-winner Tawny Cypress (The Blacklist: Redemption) as the now-adult survivors of a plane crash that stranded their wildly talented high school girls’ soccer team deep in the Canadian wilderness in 1996.
Equal parts survival epic, psychological horror story and coming-of-age drama, Yellowjackets has a 100% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where it was the fourth highest-rated drama of 2021, and became the second-most streamed series in Showtime’s history (topped only by Dexter: New Blood), leading to the show’s renewal for a second season before the first had even concluded in the States.
As The Guardian says, “Yellowjackets is the most fun TV show in forever.”
RAY DONOVAN: THE MOVIE | Stream now
Ray Donovan: The Movie picks up where the seventh and final season of the Emmy-winning series left off, with Mickey (Oscar winner Jon Voight) in the wind and Ray (eight-time Emmy nominee Liev Schreiber) determined to find and stop him before he can cause any more carnage.
With multi-award-winners Eddie Marsan (Wrath of Man21 Grams) and Dash Mihok (Silver Linings PlaybookRomeo + Juliet), Pooch Hall (The Game), and Katharine Moennig (The L Word) co-starring, the film also weaves together the present-day fallout from the Donovan/Sullivan feud with Ray and Mickey’s origin story from 30 years ago.
Prompted by fan protests at the show’s cancellation, Ray Donovan: The Movie has an 87% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with New York Magazine saying, “Ray Donovan: The Movie never feels like cheap fan service; it hints at what an entire eighth season could have been and provides just enough closure while avoiding easy conclusions for most of its characters.”
SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE S1 | Binge now, first on Showmax
One of Rotten Tomatoes’ Most Anticipated Shows of 2022, HBO’s Somebody Somewhere centres on Sam, a 40-something woman grappling with loss and acceptance as she fields a mid-life crisis following her sister’s death. Sam returns to her hometown but struggles to fit into its mold, until she finds her saving grace in singing, and a community of outsiders who don’t fit in, and don’t give up.
Starring and executive produced by Bridget Everett (Lady DynamiteUnbelievableInside Amy Schumer), the comedy-drama has a 100% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Led by a captivating Bridget Everett, Somebody Somewhere explores the human condition with tenderness, grace, and warmth.”
Everett’s central performance has drawn widespread critical acclaim, with The Wrap saying, “America is about to discover what New York theatre diehards have known for years: Bridget Everett is a force – and a voice – to be reckoned with.”
HBO has already renewed Somebody Somewhere for a second season.
SMALL AXE | Binge now
A collection of five films by Oscar winner Steve McQueen (12 Years A Slave), Small Axe is based on the real-life experiences of London’s West Indian community between 1969 and 1982.
The anthology has won over 24 international awards, including a Critics’ Choice Award for John Boyega, a BAFTA for Malachi Kirby, and a Royal Television Society Award for Shaun Parkes in 2021, with Letitia Wright and Micheal Wright also nominated for a BAFTA. The series was also nominated for an Emmy for its cinematography and won five BAFTA craft awards, with McQueen taking home the Innovative Storytelling European Film Award.
The second film, Lovers Rock, was named the best film of 2020 by Sight & Sound in its poll of over 100 critics globally. Set over a single evening at a house party in 1980s West London, Lovers Rock follows intertwined relationships against a background of violence, romance and music. The film has a 98% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus calls it “a lovingly crafted ode to Black joy.”
CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM S11 | Binge from 8 April
So this misanthrope decides to shoot a TV series in the middle of a pandemic…
No, it’s not a joke – or rather, not just one. It’s a whole new season of the perennially inappropriate Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiasm.
The series star and creator (and 28-time Emmy nominee) returns alongside Susie Essman, Jeff Garlin, Cheryl Hines, and J.B. Smoove, while the season’s guest line-up knocks it out of the park with stars like Lucy Liu, Woody Harrelson, Kaley Cuoco, Bill Hader, Jon Hamm, Seth Rogen, Albert Brooks and Tracey Ullman, not to mention Vince Vaughn returning as Freddy Funkhouser and Ted Danson back to annoy Larry as Cheryl’s plus-one.
Nominated for no fewer than 47 Emmys (with just two wins), Curb Your Enthusiasm is #54 on IMDb’s Top Rated TV list, with a 94% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes for Season 11. Giving it a 100% rating on MetacriticThe Daily Beast says, “It’s reassuring to know that no amount of paradigm-shifting, reality-altering events can stop the fictional Larry David from being a smug, screamy, narcissistic loon, and the real Larry David from being the funniest comedian on television.”
PHOENIX RISING | Binge now, first on Showmax
HBO’s two-part documentary Phoenix Rising follows the true story of Emmy-nominated actress and activist Evan Rachel Wood, a survivor of domestic violence, as she moves toward naming her infamous abuser for the first time and advocates for The Phoenix Act, extending the statute of limitations in California for domestic violence felonies.
Produced and directed by Oscar-, Emmy- and BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Amy Berg (The Case Against Adnan SyedDeliver Us from Evil), The Telegraph calls the documentary a “blazingly courageous, necessary watch.”
The documentary has a 97% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus says, “Evan Rachel Wood is fearless in Phoenix Rising, a harrowing exposé on abuse, tabloid complicity, and the long process of healing.”
PAINTING WITH JOHN S2 | Binge from 4 April, first on Showmax
Painting With John was Rotten Tomatoes’ 14th best new series of 2021 and their 29th best TV series of 2021 overall, with a 100% critics’ rating. As the critics’ consensus there says, “A celebration of art and life through the eyes of a delightful curmudgeon, Painting with John is a surprising, intimate feat of TV joy.”
Written, directed by and starring John Lurie, co-founder of musical group The Lounge Lizards, the series is part meditative tutorial, part fireside chat. Each episode has John at his worktable at his home in the Caribbean, honing his watercolour techniques and sharing what he’s learned about life, reminding us to prioritise some time every day for creativity, fun and a bit of mischief.
“I was hoping this show would be educational, but I really don’t know what the f*ck I’m doing,” says John. He adds, “My hope is to make a TV show where people see it and say, ‘I have no idea what I just saw, but I couldn’t stop watching it and it was wonderful… I think I can get there in season two.”
The Playlist hailed Season 1 as “one of the smartest shows on television,” placing it seventh on their best TV shows of 2021 list, and adding, “It’s a show about painting that’s not really about painting. Lurie uses the time to ponder questions about life, music, and art. It becomes a series of deeply personal conversations with a genius as Lurie opens up about his own life, including his cancer treatment. We may have all been alone in January 2021, but John Lurie made that isolation easier to take.”
FLATBUSH MISDEMEANORS | Binge now
Comedy series Flatbush Misdemeanors follows Dan and Kevin, two longtime friends trying to climb out of their heads and connect with others in their brash new surroundings in Flatbush, Brooklyn.
Created by and starring Black Reel Award nominee Kevin Iso (That Damn Michael Che) and Dan Perlman, the show – which is based on their multi-award-winning 2017 digital series – has already been renewed for a second season.
Season 1 has a 100% critics rating on Rotten TomatoesRogerEbert.com calls it “a hilarious, unforced two-hander that feels totally fresh,” while TV Guide praises “the heartfelt friendship at the core of this darkly comedic series”, calling it “one of the best shows of 2021.”
AMERICAN RUST S1 | Binge now
Set in a small Rust Belt town in Pennsylvania, American Rust stars Emmy winner Jeff Daniels (The Comey RuleThe Newsroom) as police chief Del Harris, who finds himself in a compromised position after the son of the woman he loves (Emmy nominee Maura Tierney from The AffairYour Honor) is accused of murder.
Based on the LA Times Book Prize-winning novel of the same name by Pulitzer Prize finalist Philipp Meyer, American Rust was nominated for a 2022 Satellite Award for Best Drama Series.
Look out for Emmy nominee Bill Camp (The Night Of, The Queen’s GambitJoker), Tony Award winner David Alvarez (West Side Story), and Teen Choice nominee Mark Pellegrino (Supernatural).

When the system fails and pushes her into hiding, she becomes a cleaning lady for the mob and starts playing the game by her own rules.

Based on the infamous “texting suicide case,” The Girl from Plainville is now available to binge

Published

on

The human story behind the “texting suicide case” – Elle Fanning stars in The Girl From Plainville
• One of Rotten Tomatoes’ Most Anticipated Shows of 2022
• Based on the “texting suicide case” involving teenagers Michelle Carter and Conrad Roy
• Starring Elle Fanning, Colton Ryan and Oscar nominee Chloë Sevigny
• 94% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes
• “A compassionate and devastating portrait of two teens in trouble” The Hollywood Reporter
• Created by Liz Hannah (The Dropout) and Patrick Macmanus (Dr. Death), with Oscar nominee Lisa Cholodenko (Unbelievable, The Kids Are All Right) among the directors
One of Rotten Tomatoes’ Most Anticipated Shows of 2022, The Girl From Plainville is now available to binge on Showmax. Critics Choice nominee Elle Fanning (The GreatMaleficent) executive produces and stars as Michelle Carter, the teenager at the centre of the unprecedented “texting suicide case” that arose from the death of her boyfriend, Conrad Roy, in 2014.
The widely publicised case saw Carter charged with involuntary manslaughter for encouraging Conrad to commit suicide, mostly through phone calls and hundreds of text messages.
Colton Ryan (Little Voice) and Oscar nominee Chloë Sevigny (Boys Don’t CryWe Are Who We Are) co-star as Conrad and his mother, Lynn Roy.
Portraying the two very human, very damaged teenagers with sensitivity was a crucial consideration for both the show’s cast. “This was a very ripped-from-the-headlines case,” Elle said on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. But, “the media really painted a very one-dimensional [picture] of this story: Michelle was kind of this black widow manipulator, and Conrad was her victim – and he very much was a victim in this situation, but also, he was painted very one-dimensionally. We didn’t get to know about the young man that he was.”
For Elle, the role came with a great deal of responsibility. “I had to really think about the story that we were telling,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “It ultimately ends in such a tragedy, and these [families] are still alive. We have to be sensitive to them. So it had to be told in the right way that could actually be helpful, and possibly help someone out there who’s suffering.”
Created by Critics Choice nominee Liz Hannah (The DropoutMindhunter) and Patrick Macmanus (Dr. Death), The Girl From Plainville has a 94% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The Hollywood Reporter calls it, “A compassionate and devastating portrait of two teens in trouble.” Time says, “The Girl From Plainville rises to the significant challenge of offering novel insight into the psyche of a young woman whose widely discussed actions seemed not just indefensible, but also inexplicable to the public.” And LA Times hails it as “thoughtful and intelligent,” praising its tone as “neither sensationalistic nor judgmental.”
The actors were conscious of the need to monitor their own judgement about the characters they would be playing. On Good Morning America, Elle noted that although her role is based closely on a real, living person, “I am playing a character. And you can’t judge a character that you play. You don’t have to agree with the decisions that they made or necessarily like them but I think I have to come at it from an understanding.”
Both Elle and Colton belong to the same generation as Michelle and Conrad, and have grown up in the digital world. “This is something that we’re all trying to navigate, this false sense of reality that we face in the technological age of texting and social media and that instant gratification that you feel when you get a text, and how easy it is to say things online and to not see the consequences of the hurt that your words can cause,” Elle said in an interview with Collider.
In the real world, Michelle and Conrad only actually met face to face a handful of times. The bond between them – powerful enough to shape the outcome of both their lives – was built mainly on text messages.
Elle says the blurring of fantasy and reality, and the false sense of intimacy that texting can create, were built into the way the story is told. In the hands of directors like Oscar nominee Lisa Cholodenko (UnbelievableThe Kids Are All Right), the show reimagines the pair’s text exchanges as if they were spoken face to face in intimate moments, and even segues into fantastical musical numbers – Michelle was a huge fan of the series Glee – to help paint the emotional and psychological landscape of their relationship.
“We had access to all the text messages, so reading those was very haunting and very difficult,” Elle told Collider. “You could see that these two people were in a dark place and they were both reaching out to one another, but reaching out to the wrong people. You just wish that they had never met. They didn’t bring out the best sides of each other, unfortunately. So yeah, Colton and I talked about it a bit. We both are the same age and we have phones, ourselves, so we can understand how you can get wrapped up in that alternate universe. You can create whatever you want on your phone.”
In an interview with Extra TV, Colton said, “This still happens under all of our watch. Many young people are looking for themselves, and I think that [the show is] asking the question, ‘Are they looking for it in the wrong place? Are we all looking for it in the wrong place, by valuing ourselves more online?’”
Elle hopes The Girl from Plainville will help to destigmatise mental health and get people talking about it. And, as LA Times put it, “Plainville may get you thinking more generally about responsibility – of media that sells kids death-wrapped images of love, of how ready we are to believe we know what we only think we know. It may at least remind you that, in an age fueled by reductive statements about everything under the sun, nothing human is as simple as it seems.”

Orlando Pirates and RS Berkane square off in CAF Confederation Cup final, available to stream live on Showmax Pro in Africa

Published

on

The annual CAF Confederation Cup comes to an epic close on Friday, 20 May 2022 at Uyo in Nigeria as South Africa’s Orlando Pirates go head to head with Morocco’s RS Berkane.
All the footballing action will be available to stream live on Showmax Pro in Africa from 20:00 (WAT); 21:00 (CAT); 22:00 (EAT), courtesy of SuperSport.
Pirates will be playing in their fourth CAF final despite a shock home defeat to Al Ahli Tripoli in their second semi-final leg as they advanced 2-1 on aggregate to secure their place in the final. Their opponents, RS Berkane, defeated Congolese giants TP Mazembe 4-2 over two legs. RS Berkane, the 2019/2020 CAF Confederations Cup champions, will be playing in their third final after coming up short in 2018/19 when they finished as runners up.
The Soweto giants have not enjoyed a good domestic season as they currently sit in a disappointing seventh place in the DStv Premiership. League form normally goes out the window when it comes to cup competitions and this was the case for Ezimnyama Ngenkani as they topped their group, which consisted of Al-Ittihad Tripoli, JS Saoura and Royal Leopards with four wins, one draw and one defeat in their six games.
The Orange Boys currently share the same domestic position as their opponents as they sit seventh in the Botola Pro 1, further demonstrating that league form does not translate to cup performances. Like Pirates, RS Berkane also topped their group, which had Simba S.C, ASEC Mimosas and Union Sportive Gendarmerie Nationale on the way to the knockout stages, managing three wins, a draw and two losses. This sets up a perfectly balanced final that both sets of supporters and neutrals will be glued to until the final whistle.
The winner of the CAF Confederation Cup will take home a whopping $1.25 million in prize money and will also take part in the CAF Super Cup, where they will play against the winner of the CAF Champions League which will see Al Ahly will battle it out in the final against Wydad Casablanca on Monday, 30 May 2022 – which will also be live on Showmax Pro. All the CAF action will be streaming live for all Showmax Pro subscribers in Africa, courtesy of SuperSport.

Mellow & Sleazy on working separately

We’re almost never in the studio at the same time. He usually makes his own beats separately and I make my own beats separately, then we just exchange the projects and finish off each other’s projects. We just give each other space – he does his own thing, I do my own thing then once we’re done we’ll share what we have done, he’ll edit whatever I’ve done and I’ll edit whatever he did, then it becomes a full song.

Mellow & Sleazy on experimental sounds

So basically we’ve only tried experimenting with two genres, Bacardi and… I forgot the name of the sound but it’s from Angola so we’ve tried experimenting with those two sounds and a bit of soulfulness, because most of the people know us for being hardcore producers that make like loud music all the time, so we tried making it soulful but keeping that element at the same time. The whole EP is Bacardi, basically.

Mellow & Sleazy on exciting talent showcased on their new EP

The underground talent that we have on our EP… the first one is M.J, he’s a rapper and singer. He’s been on a lot of hits actually, he’s one of the vocalists that we always work with because he’s very versatile. He can do what five vocalists can do in the studio, so that’s why we’re always working with him. Another one is Matute Boy. Bacardi usually needs someone to rap fast, and with the lingo… and who else? Azi! Azi is a singer, we’ve just started working with him now, he’s very very new but he’s too much. I’ve never heard a voice like that so yeah, we’ll see where that takes us.
