He's Back! Comedian Nkomode stages comeback

NkomodeHe has been back in the country for over a year and has even featured in movies alongside Lil Win but former concert party drama champion and comedian, Nkomode is yet to make any serious impact on the entertainment scene. Films he has acted in include Obrenya, Nkomode Komfo, Kristo Nti, Forget and Akratie Nkivan and Nkomode says they are just items to help him settle and get into the scheme of things. “I am warming myself for the real game to continue from where I left off,” he says. That might certainly be some enormous warming up since he faces stiff competition from the likes of Lil Win, Agya Koo and Akrobeto who are currently making strides on the local comedy scene. Nkomode, whose real name is Yaw Donkor, dropped off the entertainment radar after winning the Key Soap Concert Party Champion of Champions award for three consecutive years: 1996, 1997 and 1998. He told Showbiz last Friday that he was not worried about the current crop of comedy leaders in the country. “That is not a problem at all because I am not going to rival anyone for superiority. We are all playing our various parts just like a football team where there is a goalkeeper, striker and a defender. “ All these players play their roles to ensure they beat their opponent. I am here to continue from where I left off and not to overtake anyone. “I have been out of the country for 15 years and after moving around the world, I think that it is time for me to come back since there is no place like home. The Original Nkomode is back and ready to contribute my bit to comedy”, he said. So what could have accounted for his long absence and what influenced his comeback? He said after capturing the comedy scene in Ghana, he decided to leave for better opportunities abroad and to also allow the younger one some room to show what they could do. After spending more than a decade abroad, however, some of his colleagues such as Akrobetu convinced him to come back to join the local movie industry since it was rewarding financially. “Most of the local producers knowing how talented I am, also called me regularly to come down so they can feature me in their movies. Sincerely, I have not regretted coming back to do what I love to do best”. Though he is grateful for the exposure Key Soap Concert Party gave him, Nkomode didn’t hide his disappointment that the once vibrant concert party drama was virtually no longer in existence. He entreated the government to invest in the arts and creative industry since it will not only help in development but also provide employment for many talented people. “A country with no interest in entertainment is definitely dead. We need to revive concert party drama. It helped to reduce stress,” he stated. For now, Nkomode who says he is learning the “rudiments of the game,” assured his fans to watch out for more of him in local movies since he has come to “strengthen comedy”. Nkomode hails from Wassa Akropong in the Western Region. He shot to fame in the 1990s as a member of the Kristo Asafo group. As a solo stage comedian, he won the best comedian award for three years running. Credit: Graphic Showbiz]]>
