Hiphop World Magazine slams D’banj’s Koko Concert
Although my twitter timeline was flooded with varying tweets as to how the much anticipated D’banj Koko Concert went on in Lagos, I didn’t know what to make of it since I wasn’t there myself. However, on Friday I received a newsletter from Hiphop World Magazine, one of Nigeria’s leading publications on music and urban culture describing the concert in its editorial as “Koko Concert: How Not To Organise a Show”. Check out what they had to say: The choice of venue for the Koko Concert was a brave one, Eko Atlantic was a virtually untested ground for musical shows. But that does not excuse the shoddiness and poor planning that characterised the show. Afterall, the venue is not exactly strange to hosting events featuring large numbers of people. The recently concluded Copa Lagos beach football competition ended there a few weeks ago. Starting right from the gate, one begins to have an idea of how little thought was given into the welfare of attendees, who had to walk for close to an hour just to get to the stage. And it didn’t even matter if you had regular ticket or VVIP, you all had to walk. And when you got to the stage, the performances weren’t all that. The GOOD Music duo of Pusha T and Big Sean didn’t wow the audience and took too long on stage. Tinie Tempah was also guilty of that but at least his own performance was the highlight of the night. Although it wasn’t his show and there were other artistes scheduled to perform. D’Banj eventually came on stage and apologise to the VVIP crowd, asking the other members of the audience to help him do so. He also brought back the GOOD Music crew back on stage for an inordinately long period of time. So some other Nigerian artistes, like the Ice Prince only managed to get back stage and EME crew, who turned back at the venue, did not have the opportunity to perform. And the show ended abruptly when D’Banj announced pleaded for thirty more minutes before the light is shut down, leaving the teeming crowd to exit the venue at the same time and begin the Moses/ Israelites like trek back to their cars. That was not how to organise a show]]>
