While we’re sad to see the hot, sunny days of summer pass us by once again, we’re looking forward to the crisp, cool days of fall! There’s nothing quite like cozy nights curled up in front of the fire, chunky sweaters, and steaming drinks to help ease us into fall weather.
One thing we love about fall weather is the style. Everything from the boots to leather bomber jackets to the rich, gorgeous fabrics like velvet, wool, and cashmere that all come back in style as the leaves change just make our fashion-happy hearts sing.
As with every fashion season, there are some new trends that come bursting onto the catwalks that we like to keep our eyes on. This year, JJ’s Housedesigner Jessica is noticing the rebirth of animal print.
“There’s a lot of preconceptions about animal print being trashy, but this season is all about luxe leopard and zebra prints in long coats, like those from Miu Miu or Marc Jacobs.”
Jessica recommends pairing these coats with neutrals, like slim black trousers and a black turtleneck, or a camel shift dress. Refrain from adding any more prints to the outfit, unless you want to look like an optical illusion.
Leather is also back in a big way, which we are loving. Leather miniskirts, dresses, and pants are all the rage this fall. To prevent it from looking too dominatrix inspired, Elena, designer for VeryVoga, recommends pairing leather pieces with softer items.
“If you want to wear a leather miniskirt and worry it’s too much, wear it with a soft knit, fluffy sweater and caramel suede booties to soften the entire look.”
You can also extend many of your summer pieces into fall weather this year since florals are still big on the runways of fall. Look for any floral piece that has a darker background, such as a floral print on black and pair it with knee-high boots and a chunky scarf to welcome in the colder months.
Not ready to give up your cottage plaid just yet? You don’t need to! Plaid and checks of all types are in for fall fashion, and not just in a casual way! Toss a plaid button-down over your LBD with towering high heels to juxtapose the sexy style with the soft, coziness of the plaid. To dress it up even further, match a plaid tunic with knee-high boots, leather leggings, and a visually interesting belt for a great casual Friday look.
You will also be seeing a lot of tweeds this fall season. The professor’s favorite fabric is showing up in coats, dresses, and skirts. This rich, warm fabric is pretty timeless, so we suggest investing in a piece that will stand the test of time. A shift dress, pencil skirt, or a slim-fitting blazer (complete with leather elbow patches, if you so wish) are all great options that will last you long past this one season. We love pairing tweed nubby style with something soft and opulent, like silk or velvet.
