Finding Africa’s Next Generation of Filmmakers: Netflix & UNESCO Launch Groundbreaking Competition in Sub-Saharan Africa

Published

on

Netflix and UNESCO have partnered to launch an innovative short film competition on ‘African Folktales, Reimagined’ across Sub-Saharan Africa . Winners of the competition will be trained and mentored by industry professionals and provided with a US$75,000 production budget to create short films that will premiere on Netflix in 2022 as an “Anthology of African folktales”.

One key aim of this competition is to discover new voices and to give emerging filmmakers in Sub-Saharan Africa visibility on a global scale. We want to find the bravest, wittiest, and most surprising retellings of some of Africa’s most-loved folktales and share them with entertainment fans around the world in over 190 countries.

The competition, which will be administered by Dalberg , will open on 14 October 2021 until 14 November 2021. Each of the 6 winners will receive a production grant of US$75,000 (through a local production company) to develop, shoot and post-produce their films under the guidance of industry mentors selected by UNESCO & Netflix to ensure everyone involved in the production is fairly compensated. In addition, each of the 6 winners will also receive $25,000.

UNESCO and Netflix both strongly believe in the importance of promoting diverse local stories, and bringing them to the world. They recognize that many emerging filmmakers struggle with finding the right resources and visibility to enable them to fully unleash their talents and develop their creative careers. This competition aims to address these issues and enable African storytellers to take a first step towards showcasing their content to a global audience.

This partnership will also help create sustainable employment and encourage economic growth and it will therefore contribute to the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, a series of targets established by the United Nations which aims to end global poverty in all its forms by the end of this decade. This film competition will also help reduce inequalities by facilitating access to global markets and by guaranteeing dignified working conditions. All of these are key goals within the 2030 Agenda.

The competition is open to emerging filmmakers across Sub-Saharan Africa on the theme of “African Folktales, Reimagined.” Folktales have always been an important way of passing on culture, heritage, and values to future generations, while constantly inviting people to reimagine their relevance to our contemporary societies. This theme is inspired by African Union 2063 Agenda’s Aspiration 5, which celebrates African cultural identity, common heritage, values, and ethics. This competition aims to harness this important tradition with a modern outlook while leveraging new mediums of distributing artistic and creative content, like Netflix.

For the first round, applicants will be required to submit a synopsis of their concept (no more than 500 words) as well as links to a recent CV and a portfolio/ evidence of any past audiovisual work they have produced. Applications can be submitted via  from October 14th at 16:00 CET and will close on November 14th, 2021 at 13:59 PM CET.

UNESCO comments:

“It is important that the film sector acts to ensure the voices of Africa are heard, by supporting the emergence of diverse cultural expressions, putting forth new ideas and emotions, and creating opportunities for creators to contribute to global dialogue for peace, culture and development.” – Audrey Azoulay, Director-General, UNESCO.

“The film sector must ensure that the creative talents of Africa are promoted, by supporting young talents and making sure that African filmmakers contribute to the international film industry.” – Ernesto Ottone R., Assistant Director-General for Culture, UNESCO.

Netflix comments:

Growing up, entertainment was how I connected with people. I fell in love with the stories and characters I saw on screen and experienced how storytelling has the power to inspire, which is why I’m excited about this partnership with UNESCO and the opportunities ahead. Together we will promote local cultures and support the creative industries in telling stories that cross borders, reflect universal truths, and ultimately, bring us together.” Ted Sarandos, Co-CEO and Chief Content Officer, Netflix.

“Africa has a rich storytelling heritage and a wealth of folktales that have been passed down for generations. When you marry these very local stories with Africa’s emerging talent, there’s no limit to fresh new stories to connect people with African cultures and bring the world that much closer to each other” – Ben Amadasun, Director of Content in Africa, Netflix.

African Countries Open to Tourists in 2021-22

Published

on

Africa is ramping up its vaccination efforts. With more than 200 million doses of vaccines already transported there, African countries are taking actions to improve anti-coronavirus measures. They’re strengthening airport security and introducing temperature measurement at borders. Some countries even have already opened for tourists. Others plan to follow through as soon as they can. Check out the post below to learn how to get to one of these culturally rich countries, while staying safe.

Countries Opened Right Now

The pandemic situation varies in different parts of Africa. Some countries managed to slow down the spread of coronavirus almost completely. At this moment, places such as South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Mauritania, Nigeria, and others have opened borders for tourists with some requirements:

  1. A PCR test, taken recently and showing negative results
  2. Quarantine is required for some locations
  3. A certificate of vaccination

Angola, Libya, Morocco, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Niger, and others also welcome tourists on their territory. The requirements are the same. A 7-14 days quarantine is necessary to be able to explore the country at your leisure.

How Can I Get a Visa?

The procedure hasn’t changed since the coronavirus outbreak. You can apply through the Embassy, although it’s much cheaper to do it online. Most African countries offer an opportunity to submit all the necessary documents electronically.

  1. Fill in the application form online. These are the documents you may need:

  • Booked tickets
  • A domestic and international passport
  • An invitation from a hotel, business partner or a friend
  • Two photos compatible with a certain set of specifications (Check here for visa photo requirements)
  • Proof of sufficient funds

Go to the official website of your destination country for a detailed list of documents.

  1. Pay a visa fee. It usually depends on the processing country, as well as on your destination.

  1. Submit the application. In some cases, you’re required to print it out and send it to the Embassy via mail. You may also be required to visit in person for an interview with a consular officer.

Meet Photo Specifications

One of the most popular reasons for visa rejection is incorrect photo format. Every country sets its own standards. As a rule, they clearly establish the sizes: height and width for paper applications, pixels for online submissions. The background color is also important. The most common one is white or light grey. Some countries have red or blue, but those are quite rare.

Apply to online editing tools to save your time and money. The service will crop the image automatically. You  just need to set the country and ID type.

You won’t have to go to a professional photo studio to get the picture, if you use your phone to take a selfie at home.

Once you have uploaded your image, the software will process it and leave you with a download link to a fully compliant photo. Besides, online photo services are much cheaper than professional studios or photo centres. To take, edit and print out your photo will cost you no more than $8, which is half the price for most offline alternatives.

Visa Photo Tips

These are the tips to help you make the photo better:

  • Look straight, eyes focused on the camera, lips relaxed
  • Sunglasses and prescription glasses non allowed
  • Wear monochrome clothes that flatter your complexion. Naked shoulders are not accepted
  • Avoid any shadows in the frame
  • Choose a place where an over or under-exposure won’t happen

Africa Post-Covid: Protect Yourself

When traveling in Africa, follow the rules to avoid catching the infection:

  1. Vaccinate several weeks before the trip. It’s necessary for the antibodies to fully form and fight off the virus. Besides, the certificate will help you skip quarantine in some cases.
  2. Always wear a mask and gloves. They decrease the risk of interacting with the virus.
  3. Maintain the distance to other people (1,5-2 meters).
  4. Wash your groceries.
  5. Avoid social gatherings.

Many African countries profit from tourism. No doubt they are suffering economically due to the restrictions. Most of them are working hard to meet international security standards and provide a safe environment for travelers. In 2021-2022, the majority will open borders for foreigners to explore the rich African cultures. Learn more about the COVID situation in Africa on the official website.

The Evolution of Vape Tech

Published

on

The Evolution of Vape Tech

The vape market has evolved a lot in the past few years. Vapes that used to be bulky and heavy have been replaced by slim, lighter vapes that are more discreet. More and more vapes are being made with interchangeable atomizers to customize your vaping experience. And while some vapes still use a simple on-off switch, some can be modified to be a powerful variable voltage/wattage device. Then there are still some vapes that use a simple on-off switch, while some use a series of discrete buttons to adjust your vaping experience.

The evolution of vape tech — In the last year alone, the number of vape shops has increased by more than 16%. These shops have opened to meet a growing demand. Vape shops have experienced a huge jump in sales in the past year, with a 46% growth in vape products and a 30% increase in hardware sales.

The start and Development of Vaping hardware

Unless you’ve spent the last five years traipsing through the internet looking for the best vaporizer, you probably have no idea of the epic journey of the invention that vapes have gone through. There have been many designs, different atomizers, different coils, different flavors. If you’re new to the vaping world or just new to vaping, then you may not have heard of the famous Joseph Robinson, the inventor of the first modern vape.

Vape technology has come a long way since the early days of smoking e-cigarettes. The modern e-cig evolved from the e-pipe, which was invented in the 20th century. The e-pipe was the predecessor to the modern vape. E-Pipes were relatively simple, consisting of an atomizer coil and an e-liquid cartridge. Basically, the e-pipe consists of two parts: the atomizer coil and the e-liquid cartridge. The basic function of the atomizer coil was to vaporize the e-liquid.

First-generation

On December 8th, 2003, Hon Lik, the inventor of the vape pen, made a presentation at the Shenzhen Trade Exhibition Center in Shenzhen, China. The presentation was made to introduce Hon Lik’s company, Halo, and the Halo Vaporizer, the first generation of vapes. The Halo Vaporizer was a three-piece device consisting of a cartridge, atomizer, and battery. The device was patented, but Hon Lik and his company never made any money off of the product.

Second generation

While the first-generation vapes were all about vape shops and trying to get your name read on shelves, the second-generation vapes were designed to be more user-friendly than ever. They were smaller, easier to consume, and worked with other devices. The second generation of vape devices just about killed it. These devices came out of the blue and came with better battery life and more flavor options to improve the quality of vapors.

Third generation

Our minds are programmed to think “mod” for modification, but the term has expanded to mean the third generation of vaping. The first generation was the analog pipe or cigarette, the second was the clearomizer, and the third was the advanced personal vaporizer (APV). As the name implies, it’s the most advanced way to use electronic cigarettes. Advanced Personal Vaporizer (APV), or mods for short, are high-tech vaping devices that are devoted to perfecting the art of vaping. When you’re ready to leap into the world of vaping, you’ll want to know everything you can about your new mods, just in case you’re unfamiliar with the latest in vaping technology.

The Combination of New Technology

For many years, the vaping industry was not a very profitable industry. People were not getting rich from vapes — they were spending money on them — and that was that. However, over the last few years, the industry has seen rapid growth. The reason for this is the popularity of vaping (or e-cigarettes) has risen by about 30% every year, and it is predicted to continue rising at this fast rate.

How Did Vaping Evolved Through Time

Vaping has changed a lot since its inception in the 1960s. First, it was a dry product that was inhaled from a cigarette-like machine. Then, it was a device that was a mixture of nicotine and other chemicals, mostly propylene glycol. Finally, the industry moved to pure nicotine-based products, which still contain other chemicals that are mixed into the vapor to create the desired flavor such as blue raspberry vape juice.

The vaping industry has been growing and changing rapidly, and today it is a multi-billion dollar industry. It started with electronic cigarettes, and it grew with the demand for flavors and devices. Today, you can find any type of vaping device and flavors, and you can even personalize the experience by adding your own flavors and choosing from a wide range of devices and accessories to choose from on eJuice discount sites like eJuice Deals.

What would be The Future of the Vaping Market?

Vaping has become quite popular in the last few years. However, with its technological progress it has also become quite popular to fight the traditional cigarette. But, how does it change in the future? The tobacco industry has already found out that vaping is growing fast, so they are trying to find an answer.

As you may know, vaping is currently the most popular way to consume nicotine, with millions of vapers worldwide. It’s usually thought of as a harmless alternative to smoking, but is cannabis being overlooked? While cannabis is known for its use as a recreational drug, it can also be used to make both smoking and vaping devices, especially e-cigarettes.

The global vaping market is expected to reach a value of over US$55 billion by the end of the decade, according to a report conducted by IBISWorld. Vaping has risen in popularity in a short time frame, and a number of factors have contributed to its explosion. These include rising consumer acceptance, rising disposable income and rising awareness of the risks associated with smoking.

Are The Evolution of Vape Tech good?

As technology advances, the vaping industry expands rapidly. New devices are being introduced into the market regularly, from the simplest electronic cigarettes to the most advanced vaping devices. As technology evolves, new features are added to these devices. Today, some of the most advanced vaping devices on the market are devices with temperature control. These devices are capable of maintaining a vaping temperature that is neither too hot nor too cold. This temperature control can make sure that the Vaper’s exhaled vapor is always produced at the right temperature.

Vaping has come a long way since its introduction in the form of an e-cigarette in the early 2000s. As vaping and the technology that backs it has reached a wider audience, more and more people are noticing that vaping is a far superior alternative to the alternative, and the industry has quickly grown into a worldwide business. Vaping has also evolved to include a wide range of different products, from disposable e-cigarettes to advanced personal vaporizers. With such a wide variety of products available, it’s no wonder that vapers are constantly seeking out new and exciting products.

The vape industry has progressed faster than most realize. If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve already joined the ranks of vaping geeks. And if you’re new to vaping or didn’t know much about it before, you’re in for an exciting journey.
