‘The Undersiders’ is an audio documentary about the history of Hip Hop music and its links with notorious drug lords who directly influenced on its development. These drug lords played an important role in the carreers of Dr Dre, 2pac, Jay-Z, Drake, Niki Miinaj, etc.
It’s the 80’s… Hip-hop is beginning to emerge. Cocaine, is already everywhere. And crack is about to make a dramatic appearance into ghetto life. This unprecedented consumption will make some dealers into the new kings of the streets, and also new role models for their community.
The Undersiders will tell you the story of 8 of them. True and crude. Tales about millionaire drug dealers who at one point directly impacted on the development of hip-hop. Episode 3: Calvin Bacote a.k.a Calvin Klein
Maryland – 1989, a police patrol pulls a car over. Inside it, are 2 young men risking a 40-year prison sentence for some very nasty business. One of them is a young rapper called Shawn Carter, the other, Calvin Bacote, a big shot from Brooklyn who decides to takes the blame for the whole mess.
Calvin’s decision will change the fate of the future Jay Z.
Episode 4: Terrance ‘Gangsta’ Williams
New Orleans – 1991. A city with one of the highest homicide rates in the world.
In the streets, Terrance is a real hothead.
Between drug dealing and murders, he’s helping his 2 half-brothers to set up a music label in their utility room.
25 years later, this music label will dominate the charts thanks to rappers like Lil’ Wayne, Drake or Nicky Minaj…
Episode 5: Demetrius Flenory a.k.a Big Meech
Atlanta – 1996. A young and ambitious drug dealer settles his “business” in the world capital of strip clubs.
10 years later his business generates more than 300 million dollars and contributes to make Atlanta the world capital of rap music.
His style, his flamboyance but also his excesses will be forever part of the rap culture and still influence the world today.
Episode 6: Freeway Ricky Ross
Los Angeles – 1982, the young Ricky finds in tennis a way to get out of the ghetto and start dealing drugs to finance his training.
But 15 years later he forgot his dreams of Wimbledon to become one of the biggest Cocaine distributors in the United States.
While in jail, he discovers that the CIA used him to finance anti-communists troops in South America and that a young successful rapper « stole » his name.]]>
