I have not done a piece on Ghanaians in the Diaspora in a while, so I decided to do a special one combining three Ghanaians who are leaving their mark in various endeavors overseas. Even more special, they are women! Mabelle Prior, Adjoa Andoh & Freema Agyeman
Adjoa Andoh is a British film, television, stage and radio actress of Ghanaian descent. She is known on the UK stage for lead roles at the RSC, the National Theatre, the Royal Court Theatre and the Almeida Theatre, and is a familiar face on three of British television’s most popular shows, ‘Doctor Who’, ‘Casualty’ and ‘EastEnders’.
Adjoa is also the voice of Alexander McCall Smith’s No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency; and she won “Audio Book of the Year” for Tea Time for the Traditionally Built.She made her Hollywood debut in 2009 starring as Nelson Mandela’s Chief of Staff Brenda Mazibuko alongside Morgan Freeman in Clint Eastwood’s critically acclaimed ‘Invictus’.
Adjoa has since starred in several TV series including Law & Order: UK, Julius Caesar, Wizards vs. Aliens, Broadchurch, and Cucumber.
Freema Agyeman on is an English actress who is known for playing Martha Jones in the BBC science fiction series Doctor Who and its spin-off series Torchwood. Following her departure from Doctor Who and guest spots in BBC programmes Survivors and Little Dorrit, Frema held a starring role as Alesha Phillips in the crime procedural drama Law & Order: UK between 2009 and 2012. In 2013, she made her US television debut on The CW’s teen drama The Carrie Diaries as Larissa Loughlin, a style editor at Interview magazine.
Freema’s mother is Iranian and her father, Osei is Ghanaian. She attended Our Lady’s Convent RC High School, a Catholic school in Stamford Hill and during the summer of 1996 she studied at the Anna Scher Theatre School in Islington and studied performing arts and drama at Middlesex University, graduating in 2000. Frema has martial arts skills, which prompted speculation that she would bring a more physical approach to the role of the Doctor’s companion. She is also an ambassador for Divine Chocolate, a fairtrade corporation that works with Ghanaian cocoa farmers.
Freema appears in the Netflix series Sense8, released in June 2015. She is a series regular and plays Amanita, the girlfriend of Nomi, a sensate. Sense8 is an American science fiction drama web television series created, written and executive-produced by Andy and Lana Wachowski and J. Michael Straczynski. The plot revolves around eight strangers from different parts of the world who suddenly become mentally and emotionally linked.
Mabelle Prior is a Swiss Ghanaian/Togolese, who is the President and Founder of Swiss Most Beautiful-ASMB. Also known as ‘Ghana’s Radio Queen’, Mabelle is former broadcast journalist and producer of Women and children’s programme in the 90’s back home at Ghana Broadcasting Corporation. She continued this activity in Swiss for a while before getting engaged in syndical activities and became the first young black lady in the federatif commitee of migration and the first young black lady in the Federatif committee of women.
On the Project Miss Swiss Most Beautiful, Mabelle believes that every young lady passionate about fashion and beauty contest needs to be given the chance to try her luck no matter her race or country of origin. Miss Swiss Most Beautiful is the first project of its type in Switzerland, and is very dear to the youth in fashion in Switzerland. More world projects are on the way since Miss World Most Beautiful is already being planned by the Association, every country in the world will have the opportunity to present their candidates.
Mabelle is a university graduate, with a master’s degree in journalism. She speaks six languages. She also works on projects such as BIEL International Fashion- which serves as a platform for promoting multicultural inter-nationality within and around Biel and the entire Switzerland, while working towards establishing favorable relations and cultural ties between Biel, it’s surrounding communes residents, Swiss Nationals and foreign Nationals via showcase of fashion, culture and traditions. Creating a platform for cultures to create awareness for their products and attracting foreign investment to the City of Biel forms a major part of the mission at BIF.- ASMB project founded by Mabelle Prior.
Mabelle is presently the editorial director of Swissglamour Mag (www.Swissglamourcelebrities.com). She gives equal opportunity to every youth passionate of Journalism to go to the field, make interviews, polish and develop their talent in the profession, write and publish news and gossips in a revolutionary and alternative youth style. She has also authored three books set for release soon.
