Mishandling of Bodies During Funerals: An Emerging Issue in Ghana
In recent times, an alarming trend has surfaced in Ghana, particularly among the youth, where funeral ceremonies, once revered for their solemnity are being marred by disrespectful behavior toward the deceased.
Disturbing videos and reports have shown attendees engaging in playful and irreverent acts with the bodies, a practice that has drawn widespread criticism.
Traditionally, funerals in Ghana have been a time for mourning and paying respects to the departed, with deep-rooted cultural and religious practices meant to honor the dead. However, this shift towards treating funerals as opportunities for spectacle rather than solemn reflection has raised concerns about the erosion of cultural values.
The sanctity of funerals must be preserved, as they serve to dignify both the deceased and their families. Disrespecting the mortal remains through such actions not only devalues life but also shows a lack of empathy for grieving families.
As this trend continues to spread, many are calling for greater awareness and education, especially among the youth, to ensure that our long-standing traditions of respect and dignity at funerals are upheld.

It’s important that we preserve the sacredness of these ceremonies and show respect for both the living and the dead.
