Multichoice Ghana for the second year in a row supported the winner of the Best Journalist for an education story at the Ghana Journalist 16th Awards event, which was held on September 9, at the Banquet Hall, State House, in Accra. Multichoice Ghana General Manager, Cecil Sunkwa-Mills made the presentation.
The theme for this year’s award ceremony was “Giving Impetus to Democracy and Development: the Role of Investigative Journalism”. The 2011 GJA Competition Awards is the 16th, and has become a regular feature of activities of the Association, which was founded on August 14, 1949. An 11-member Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards Committee was inaugurated to examine and evaluate 250 entries of contestants and nominations received from the public for 2011.
The guest of honor was H.E. the Vice President of Ghana, John Mahama, Mr. John Tia Akologu – Minister for Communications, who and Mr David Mureithi, Managing Director of Unilever West Africa. The Vice President challenged journalists to shun away from what he terms ‘the regurgitation of malicious rumor, ideal gossip and absolute downright lies and concoctions’.
The winners of the Multichoice Ghana sponsored award for education were Fati Shaibu Ali of Etv Ghana and the Daily Graphic team. In all 34 individuals and media organizations received awards in various categories for contributing to the development and growth of journalism in the country.
