Opinion: The New Lyrical Voice In Ghanaian Dancehall – Aligata

Published

on

It’s that time of the year that every artiste across the globe is dropping bangers to feed their fans as they gear up for the yuletide festivities.. The Ghanaian music scene is no exception…

As a music promoter and fanatic, I chanced on one Dancehall artiste who goes by the name “ALIGATA” on YouTube with a Dancehall freestyle titled “CHOP CHOP”…

First few minutes into playing and re-playing the easy but hot freestyle video, I thought I was listening to a hot Dancehall kid from somewhere Jamaica but NO!!!

This Aligata kid happens to be a homegrown Dancehall lyricist who keeps dropping classic records back to back like its nobody’s business…

As curious as I was, I copied his Instagram handle(@1aligata) just to catch a vibe with him and let him know how big a fan I am of what he does…

Via our lengthy fun filled conversation on Instagram, I got to realise how prolific he was and how unbothered he was and most importantly how non-desperate he was…

He said “boss you see this music thing, it’s something that’s meant to be enjoyed first and foremost by me the artiste. That energy always transmits itself to neutral listeners all the time. I’m not in a rush for anything because I get my props from the top of the toppest worldwide by the grace of God. Anybody who has taken time off to listen to me feels so happy that there is this stupid boy somewhere in Ghana called Aligata who is a fluke LOL. Most of the vibes I drop is just to test the waters and at the right time and with the right resources, we will start major promotions like any other artiste these industry people compare to are doing. For now I’m just enjoying my journey and perfecting my hustle…”

One thing that got me glued to his vibes is the big heart he has for other talented artistes he comes across by doing a lot of ‘behind the scene’ work while he waits patiently to explode organically…

He said “boss there are other things that gives me even more joy than even putting out music and freestyles. Yes my music gives me top ratings from certain influential industry peeps in Ghana, Jamaica, UK, USA, other African countries, Europe and pockets around the world which I’m grateful for. But not every ‘LINK’ that comes through has to be used immediately. My showbiz lifestyle goes beyond just creating and releasing music. God has blessed me with some of the dopest artistes who believe in my capabilities and have entrusted parts of their music journey into my care. So definitely the links must be passed on so the whole family grow bigger. It’s a family culture. They also do same for me as artiste friends. Just know we rise by lifting others and no man is an island l…” he concluded

Aligata is one Dancehall act that we must really pay attention to to spice up the variety we have already…

I want to share with you this bad hardcore dancehall official freestyle video dubbed ‘CHOP CHOP’…

Kindly check it out and support him if you can…

People I trusted let me down – Andy of Mentor 1 fame

Published

on

AFTER creating a huge impression in the maiden edition of reality talent show, Mentor on TV3 in 2006, first runner-up Andy’s plan had been to climb the ladder and join the mainstream music industry, especially after releasing a single, Sweetie.

However, his plan did not materialise and he unfortunately faded out and he says the people he trusted let him down big time.

Speaking with Graphic Showbiz on Monday, November 8, Andy said he trusted people who came around him when he started tasting fame but the same people were his downfall.

“I would have been a bigger artiste if I had fallen into the hands of good people but I allowed some people into my life and they were my destruction. I was deceived into doing things I shouldn’t have done back then,” he said.

Andy explained that he had to take a long break from the music scene and come back at a time he was fully prepared. “During my long break, I used the opportunity to record more songs and also perfected my stage performance. I have enough songs for Ghanaians and I can say that I am ready for Ghanaian music now,” he stated.
Another thing Andy said took him off the music scene was the fact that he was not prepared to handle fame well.

“Truth be told, fame came to me so quickly and I was not ready for it. Mentor took place within three months and I became popular but I didn’t know what to do next. I was all over the place just within three months and I was confused as to how to handle the fame.

“Apart from the people who came into my life and let me down, I was also not ready for showbiz. I didn’t know how to handle it so I had to take a break and learn whatever I needed to know,” he stated.
Now being managed by a new team, Sycot Nation Empire, Andy is out with a new single titled Twe which he believes will revive his career and fortunes.

“When you have a great song and a good management team behind you, coming back isn’t a problem. The song will speak for itself because it is a nice piece and I want Ghanaians to show me love by listening to it and giving me feedback,” he said.

On what has changed in the music industry, Andy said social media was taking over everything. “During our time, social media was not vibrant. You actually had to go to radio stations to promote your songs but now, you come out with your song on social media and everyone is downloading and streaming it,” he added.

Dancehall act O’lay Original seen hustling in Zongo lane selling musical instruments

Published

on

After going off the music scene for about a year or more, O’lay Original, one of Ghana’s finest Dancehall act has, via a telephone interview enunciated without any dawdling, his insatiable comeback into the music scenes.

Before the musical break, the artiste was seemingly on top of the music business with tongue-wagging releases and collaborations which took center stage in the calendar year under review. Songs like After Church which featured Article Wan, Bolemo, Worsu, Majesty amongst others were some of the few popular songs of Benjamin Nii Antiaye Quarshie who goes by the moniker O’lay Original. It was however shocking when he decided to take a break after parting ways peacefully with his former record label.

He joined a musical instrument company at zongo lane in Accra and started working over there as a sales assistant, as a means to fund his own music promotions.

Interestingly, his decision has yielded the best of results and it is evident in his new image. His brand positioning has culminated to a point where he will command not only local but international attention whenever he spits on a record. To him, his days of hibernation was a time to learn and unlearn crafts skewered to his profession and his comeback will do the industry the good it deserves.

It was hard but necessary decision to take. As an artiste who seek progress, it is prudent to sometimes sit back to study the terrain of your profession. It helps visualize strategies to propel your career. It helps in creating a unique brand that hungers for the best. It is a time to challenge yourself to new possibilities and test your strength as an artiste.

“Initially, I was scared of losing so many things. I was scared to lose my fans, my spot in the dancehall fraternity amongst other things but I was sincerely wrong.

My fans are hungry for my comeback and I can promise you one thing, Ghana and the entire industry will be proud of the new O’lay Original ”He explained.

Certainly, this isn’t a bluff as our team had the opportunity to listen to one of his yet to be released singles titled ‘Baakor’, an Amapiano rhythm garnished with our very own Afro-fusion and all we can say is, sit tight and brace yourselves for the fire that is about to hit the industry this December from the camps of O’lay Original.

‘Baakor’ is set for release on Saturday, November 27th on all music platforms
