Paint Splashes Nima, Next Stop Alliance Française

The once-gray wall at Kawukudi Park, Nima now blazes with paint. From early in the morning till late at night on Saturday, July 7 artists and youth in Nima transformed the park and the view from Obasanjo highway with a mural painting that covers the southern corner. Slices of cement gleam graffiti style, portrait style, Keith Haring style – but all essentially Nima style. The mural paints the daily commute of Nima residents, who stop to pose and take pictures. The work, advocating peace for the upcoming elections, was a part of the art festival NMA 2012 from the nonprofit Nima Muhinmanchi Art (NMA). NMA 2012 involved Nima youth and artists in a daylong festival that celebrated the creativity of Nima, from formal painting and music to spontaneous azonto dancing and bike stunts. Nima’s own Friction, founder and former member of V.I.P, rocked the stage and invited talented kids to dance alongside him. The star-studded performance was complemented by a host of underground Nima artists who propelled the crowd with a lively performance. The second event of the two-part program takes place this Thursday evening at the Alliance Française, with an art exhibition and music concert featuring Jayso, Friction, Faint Medal, Paapa, D-Flex, and the tunes of DJ Kobby Graham. Works by NMA students and artists will be on display, alongside special pieces by internationally renowned Larry Otoo, Wiz Kudowor, and Paa Joe. The events are a culmination of this term’s NMA workshops, conceived to empower youth in Nima through art. NMA began with a promising inaugural event last July 2011 at Nima 441, and has continued with workshops and public art installations throughout the year. In the coming months, NMA looks to cement its position as an essential component of Nima and of the Accra cultural community. NMA 2012 is sponsored by rlg Communications Ghana Ltd., Orel Ghana, Pidgin Music, Empire Entertainment, Unique Xpressions, Indomie Ghana, and supported by Accra[dot]Alt, the Foundation for Contemporary Art Ghana, Skillions Records, Boogie Down Nima Productions, Breakthrough Media, Photography by Ofoe Amagavie, Capture Photography, Akuffo Productions, and Eros Modeling. NMA 2012. 12/07, 6:30 p.m. Alliance Française (Airport Residential Area). Exhibition: FREE. Concert: 5 GHS donation. ]]>
