Ghanaian Lawyer, Sandra Ankobiah has chastised Ghanaians for failing to pay their electricity bills.

According to Ms Ankobiah, the Electricity Company of Ghana has been on the receiving end of Ghanaians, even though the bulk of the citizenry have faulted on paying their electricity bills.

On March 20, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) began a massive disconnection operation in an attempt to recoup a debt of GH5.7 billion.

In an Instagram post propagating the ECG’s message to the general public, Ms Ankobiah encouraged Ghanaians to do better and pay their bills. She also warned that anyone who is found wanting will be prosecuted.

“We really have to do better as citizens. We bash the ECG all the time, yet some of us are not paying our bills. Please pay your bills, and debts, if you have any. ECG officials are still on their nationwide revenue mobilisation drive. Bear in mind that you can be prosecuted,” she wrote on Instagram.

Over the last few days, ECG has been on a massive nationwide disconnection spree primarily targeting state institutions owing a cumulative amount of $478,733,166 (GHC5.7bn).

So far, the Parliament House, Ghana Airport Company Limited, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, B5 Plus Group in the harbour city of Tema, Ho Airport ($5,291 debt), Ghana Revenue Authority ($4,619 arrears), Customs Excise and Preventive Service ($6,719 arrears), and US-based fast food chicken restaurant chain KFC ($5,711 sum unpaid) have been listed as owning huge sums of money to the ECG.

Other companies in the Ada area including McDan’s Electrochem company, a banana farm, Moonlight Fresco Limited, and a fish farm called Frosell, have had their electricity turned off by ECG officials for owning huge sums of money.
