I think it is safe to call him the rainmaker! Gospel singer, Sonnie Badu who is widely known for his hit song about opening the floodgates for blessings, ‘Baba’ almost had his ‘Kumasi Worships with Sonnie Badu’ concert at the Baba Yara Stadium on Friday night rained off – just as patrons experienced at a similar concert at the Accra Sports Stadium in November 2013.
Just when all systems were clear to go for the Kumasi concert, the rains descended heavily around 8pm leaving patrons to run for cover under any available shelter at the stadium. After waiting for almost two hours for the rains to clear, accompanied by prayers from the faithful team of singers and preachers ( as well as die-hard fans who wanted the show to go on) the heavens listened and soon the rains cleared. The production team started work on the stage clearing the water and drying the equipment as Rev Yawson led the crowd in prayers and worship. At around 12 midnight, all was set for the show to kick off but just as the band could warm up, the skies opened for some drizzles again but patrons stayed put hoping that it would only remain just drizzles.
The show finally started and what a show it was! Just like the hosts of the concert, Abeiku Santana and Fiifi Folson said, those who waited patiently had a truly worthwhile experience. The first half of performances was a back-to-back medley of praise and worship from some of the current gospel hit makers and veteran hit makers. They included Francis Amo, Enoch Arhin, OJ, SP Kofi Sarpong, Cwesi Oteng, Kojo Oteng, Victoria Sarfo, Dorcas Appiah, Tagoe Sisters, YABS and Rev Yawson.
The second half of performances was from the show headliners, Ron Kenoly and Sonnie Badu himself. Ron Kenoly performed several of his hit songs including Ancient Of Days, Sing Out, You Are, and Lift Him Up to the delight of the crowd. Sonnie Badu opened his slot with energetic singing and dancing and closed the concert with some heartwarming worship songs. He performed for hours including songs like ‘Yaweh’, ‘Baba’ and ‘Ese Oluwa’ and closed the show by blessing the crowd which had stayed up to 4 am to worship with him.
