Powerhouse of timeless style, Larry Jay connects with rurul artisans to construct sustainable fashion pieces

Set to outdoor their latest collection, dubbed ‘Soyayya’ at a presentation show in Accra on October 23, unisex Ghanaian brand Larry Jay has teamed up with rural and community artisans to create iconic looks for the catwalk.
Building a successful tailoring house with a strong stylish brand, Larry Jay, a powerhouse of ethically sustainable garments and accessories, works with artisans in rural and zongo communities to create the brand’s timeless pieces.
For the upcoming show, which will feature accessories by Nuava and Kati Torda of Sun Trade, Larry Jay’s rather stylish cuts and flowing gowns will be paired with bags and satchels made from natural jute fibers, and the Arabian influenced mules and shoes made by their head designer, style maestro, Jafaru Mohammed himself.
In addition, they will also feature fascinating large straw hats woven by crafts women in the Upper East region, as well as some rather breathtaking handwoven natural indigo yarns he designed, and commissioned the tradesmen who dye them traditionally up north.
Inspiration for Soyayya, which is Hausa for “Love”, came from an exploratory trip head designer Jafaru Mohammed made to Ghana’s northern regions, from where his ancestors hail. There, he engaged dyers and fugu spinners in Daboya and Bolgatanga to intepret his unique designs.
Adding value to their ecosystem, insisting on working within their community, and putting something back that can sustain the people as well as their craft is what sets this fashion house apart from others. The fact that the head designer, Jafaru is himself, a master tailor is another. His intrinsic understanding of the techniques of sewing makes him able to better style and cut into the human shape and figure.
Launched in 2012, Larry Jay has sustainability at its core. Focused on ethical fashion; clothes and accessories, it is inspired by nature, ethnic art and cultures, and is strongly influenced by fashion from the 1970s.

Sister Deborah Stuns in African Garments at Paris Fashion Week 2023

Sister Deborah, also known as the African Mermaid, is an award-winning pop artist and fashion icon from Ghana who promotes up-cycled clothes and indigenous fabrics, thus continuously supporting young local creatives.
Currently, the African Mermaid is in Paris for Fashion Week, playing an ambassadorial role for upcoming as well as established Ghanaian fashion brands.
Paris Fashion Week is a series of designer presentations held semiannually in Paris, France, with spring/summer and autumn/winter events held each year. Dates are determined by the French Fashion Federation. Paris Fashion Week (PFW) is held at venues throughout the city.
For PFW day one, she was at the presentation of Benjamin Benmoyal, for which she styled herself in pieces from Up Cycled Thrift Ghana paired with palazzo pants designed by Lakopué using fugu fabric.

Upcycling is the act of taking something no longer in use and giving it a second life and new function. In doing so, the finished product often becomes more practical, valuable and beautiful than what it previously was. One of the main benefits of upcycling is to reduce garment waste and pollution, thus, saving precious natural resources.
In Accra, the Kantamanto market is the largest second-hand clothing market in West Africa. Brimming with importers, market stalls and retailers – as well as bales upon bales of second-hand clothes – the market is a hive of activity. The second hand dealers, put their sewing skills, creative talents and business acumen into upcycling and selling to earn a living.
From the many choices of upcycled clothing, she selected a silver stretchy bustier with matching gloves to add glamour to her outfit. Sister Deborah opted for a pair of palazzo pants made from Northern woven fabric known as fugu designed and tailored by Ghanaian designer Lakopué. This was not his first collaboration with Sister Deborah. Lakopué created her mermaid costume for her Libilibi music video which featured Yaa Pono in 2019. He has also collaborated with stars such as Kidi, Gyakie and Sefa.
And for day two and three, she wore variants of tops made from braided synthetic hair and upcycled corsets by Afro Ele, her Ghana-based Beninoise hairstylist.
She wrapped up her time there with a cute and interactive performance at the Birimian Showroom-Exhibition Closing Party with a DJ.
Her striking presence attracted a lot of attention and media coverage which augurs well for connecting African fashion players to the global market.

The Creative President of NINETEEN57, Kofi Okyere-Darko (K O D), stated, “As we venture into ‘The Aqua Edition,’ we are reminded that our actions have a profound impact on our planet and future generations. It is our sacred duty to safeguard these invaluable havens of biodiversity, not just for the sake of our children, but for the entire world to inherit the beauty and life they hold. Through this event, we aspire to promote conscious consumerism, visionary design, and thoughtful decision-making that prioritize environmental stewardship and social responsibility.”
This year’s event promises an unforgettable evening featuring top-tier talents in music and fashion. Expect a mesmerizing fusion of traditional African rhythms, contemporary beats, and captivating runway displays by renowned African designers. Rhythms On Da Runway will celebrate Africa’s diverse cultural identity and global influence.

“Rhythms On Da Runway – The Aqua Edition” is not just an event; it’s a powerful testament to the transformative potential of collective action. Together, we will amplify our voices for positive change, illuminate the urgency of environmental issues, and stand as stewards of our planet’s future.
As we harmonize music, fashion, and responsibility, let this event be a declaration of our commitment to a brighter, more sustainable tomorrow. Be a part of this extraordinary experience, where we celebrate Africa’s rich heritage, pay tribute to trailblazers, and champion the solutions that will ensure our planet thrives for generations to come.
