The pick of Premier League matches this weekend sees Tottenham Hotspur host Manchester City in London on the evening of Saturday 21 November, with the Lilywhites and manager Jose Mourinho looking to make a statement of intent.

Spurs have been one of the most impressive teams on show early in this season and the potency of their attack – which features Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and the returning Gareth Bale – marks them out as a genuine threat.

“It’s very early on but our motivation is clear. For us, we’re going into every game to try and win. We know that’s not possible but that’s our ambition. We’re going into every game, no matter the competition believing we can win,” said the versatile Eric Dier, who noted how manager Jose Mourinho has changed their mindset.

“That’s a great feeling and it’s a great feeling to have. That’s the objective and the manager sets that tone from above. It’s very early on but we’re focusing game by game and trying to win every game we play.”

Spurs also showed their muscle against Man City last season, taking four points off Pep Guardiola’s men by drawing 2-2 at the Etihad Stadium in August 2019 before a 2-0 win in the return game in the capital in February 2020 – featuring goals from Son and Steven Bergwijn.

The top pick of fixtures for this round of La Liga action sees Atletico Madrid host Barcelona at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on the evening of Saturday 21 November. While the Rojiblancos have looked their usual gritty and resilient selves, the Blaugrana have been inconsistent and unpredictable.

This has put the pressure squarely on Barca coach Ronald Koeman, who needs his top players – such as Lionel Messi – to step up their games and drag the Catalan giants back towards the top of La Liga’s standings.

“I respect everyone’s option but, for me Leo is the best player in the world,” Koeman said of the Argentine, whose numbers in terms of goals and assists have declined through 2020. “I see the ambition he has and his winning character every day. He’s not a player I have difficulties with. He’s the captain and I speak with him every week about things on the pitch and things in the dressing room to [maintain] a good relationship with him.”

Atletico, meanwhile, can be excited about the form of rising star Joao Felix. The 20-year-old Portuguese star is starting to look like the real deal after a somewhat underwhelming 2019-20 in Madrid.

“Last year he was seen in many moments but not consistently due to injuries,” Atletico manager Diego Simeone explained. “He has always had important moments for us. What he has now is regularity. This is an important year for him and he will hopefully continue to grow.”

As far as Serie A is concerned, the top clash this weekend sees Napoli host Milan at Stadio San Paulo on the evening of Sunday 22 November, as two title hopefuls duke it out in a match which will feature some major African talent, including Kalidou Koulibaly, Victor Osimhen, Ismael Bennacer and Franck Kessie.

Milan have been the sensation of the 2020-21 season thus far, and Rossoneri coach Stefano Pioli has expressed his delight at the way in which his players have responded to his methods and tactics.

“What I see is that my players are happy and satisfied, but we have a lot more to do,” Pioli explained. “We must continue to be hungry and responsible. It’s a positive moment right now and we have to make the most of that enthusiasm, hoping it spreads to our fans too. Competition for places within the squad is important and it means nobody can rest on their laurels. It’s crucial we always stay on our toes, because we play every three days.”

Napoli, meanwhile, have seen inconsistency in their play early in the season, with manager Gennaro Gattuso insisting that the hectic schedule and tough competition near the top of the league goes a long way in explaining their form.

“We mustn’t listen to people talking about the Scudetto,” said Gattuso. “We’ll try to get into the top four. It’s a very strong league this season, every team is smart, they change their shape, and it is really difficult to find a way through. I see my Napoli team. We’re not as sharp as we were before, but with a game every two-three days, that’s only to be expected.”
