Rex Omar wins copyright infringement case against Joy Dadi
Highlife musician Rex Omar has landed a major victory against alcoholic beverage-producing company, Joy Industries Limited.
The Abiba’ hitmaker was awarded GHS 230,000 in cost and damages after he sued the company for copyright infringement five years ago.
The singer who doubles as the Chairman of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO), sued Joy Industries Limited producers of Joy Dadi bitters in June 2015 for using portions of his song ‘Da da di da’ to advertise their product without seeking his permission.
According to Rex Omar, the company had attempted to settle the matter out of court, but he did not agree because he wanted the outcome of the case to set the industry standards regarding Intellectual Property (IP) rights
