Robots and more innovations showcased by students at The Yamoransa Model Labs AIRTAD’23 Robotics Competition

The Yamoransa Model Laboratories Program has organized the second Annual Impact Roundtable Discussion and Robotics Competition (AIRTAD23) on February 20–21, 2023, to mark five years of advancing sustainable STEM education in Ghana and elsewhere.

The Yamoransa Model Labs have been a successful and long-lasting method of promoting STEM education in Ghana due to the country’s growing interest in the field. Students in the 12 Regions across Ghana and the Gambia are learning from skilled facility managers through education at the Edu Labs and Makerspaces.

On day 2 of AIRTAD23, an Edu Lab Quiz on ICT and robotics competition was held between labs of the Yamoransa Model Labs Program and Yamoransa Model Lab Gambia.

The Robotics competition was divided into two sections. The first phase saw JHS students from Yamoransa Model Lab 1-12 as well as SHS students from Yamoransa Model Lab 3.1 and Gambia being tasked to create a piece of robotic equipment that can solve a challenge/problem in their country.

The Edu Lab Competition saw primary school students from Yamoransa Model Lab 1-12 answering questions on Information Communication Technology tools and there was a Senior High school contest held as well.

At the end of the competition, Yamoransa Model Lab 2 from the Greater Accra Region of Ghana emerged winners with a prize of Ghc4,000.00 and a trophy.
Also, Lab 3.1, from the Ashanti Region won the senior high school contest and won an amazing award.
Another stage of the robotics competition was the innovative project exhibition where participating labs displayed their creative and problem-solving inventions. From a smart stick for the visually impaired, an automatic traffic light sensor, an earthquake alarm, a smart hand sanitizer dispenser, heavy-lifting robots, and various detection robots were displayed.

An award ceremony was held to officially close the curtains on the Annual Impact Roundtable Discussion and Robotics Competition (AIRTAD23). Winning labs were rewarded with ICT tools, center managers were appreciated for their work, and the executives from the Helping Africa Foundation were also acknowledged for their work in promoting STEAM education.
