Rocky Dawuni bags first VGMA nomination; says it’s not a competition for him

Despite his global exploits and international recognition, three-time Grammys nominee, Rocky Dawuni, has not received a nod at the annual Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs) since its inception.

This year, however, Rocky Dawuni has been nominated in ‘Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the year’ category alongside Ras Kuuku, Epixode, Stonebwoy and Samini, and the “Reggae/Dancehall Song of the year” in the upcoming VGMAs .

In a recent interview with Graphic Showbiz, the three-time Grammy nominee expressed that awards has never been a competition for him, and his nomination in a very competitive category at the VGMAs is nothing but a “good feeling to stand alongside his friends and brothers.”

“Awards are not competition for me, including that of VGMA. It is a recognition of works that artistes have created and an opportunity to honour and celebrate each creativity. It is always a good feeling for me to stand alongside my friends and brothers. That is why I don’t regard the VGMA as competition,” he said.

Rocky also expressed gratitude to the board of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards scheme for recognizing him, stating that “it is an amazing time to be celebrated at home.”

“Of course, they are very strong contenders, but I’m certain there is no better time than now to have this nomination. That is why I am always filled with gratitude for all blessings.

‘‘The year under review has been amazing for me as a musician, with my third Grammy nomination for the song Neva Bow Down, and playing a host of concerts around the world. It has contributed to enhancing my personal profile and shooting up the presence of Ghanaian music around the world in many ways,’’ Rocky disclosed.
