Sasha and Mo Cheddah give props to social networking at MAMA

The impact of social networking keeps growing across the globe and Africa has not been left out of the phenomenon.  From Twitter to Facebook to BlackBerry Messaging, Africans have caught the technology bug and are connecting on all levels via such social networks.  An award scheme such as the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) requires music fans to vote for their favourite artists across the continent and these social networking platforms became the medium of choice for soliciting for votes.

Campaigning for votes either directly by the nominees themselves or their fans became commonplace on these social networks. From specially designed banners with voting details to random tweets and even fan pages and support groups, every avenue on the online communities was explored by most of the nominees to garner votes and ultimately win a coveted ‘golden microphone’.

It was therefore not surprising that when Nigerian rappers Sasha and Mo Cheddah won the nod for Best Female and Best New Act respectively, they dedicated their awards to fans and friends on Facebook, Twitter and BlackBerry. Although the true identities of such celebrities are often not guaranteed on these social networks, most African stars now have some sort of presence on one of such social networks. At least for those who follow Sasha and Mo Cheddah, they had confirmation at the MAMAs.
