Selena Gomez Opens Up About Medical Challenges Preventing Her from Carrying a Pregnancy
American music star Selena Gomez has shared her hopes of becoming a mother in the future, though she recently revealed that her journey to parenthood will look different from what she once imagined.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, the singer cum actress opened up about the medical challenges that will prevent her from experiencing pregnancy and childbirth.
In the cover story released on Monday, September 9, 2024, Selena Gomez discussed her desire to start a family with her boyfriend, music producer Benny Blanco. However, she admitted, “I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”
Despite this, the crooner is hopeful about other paths to motherhood, expressing gratitude for options like surrogacy and adoption.
“I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me,” she said.
“It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people. I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby,” she added.
The ‘Single Soon’ also mentioned that she isn’t pressuring Blanco about having children. “We always make sure we’re protecting what we have, but there’s no rules,” she noted. “I want him to always be himself. I always want to be myself.”
The singer, diagnosed with lupus in 2013 and a recipient of a kidney transplant from friend Francia Raisa in 2017, was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2018.
