Shidaa Cultural Troupe wins Samsung Cultural Icon

As part of the Samsung Week Celebrations held in Accra from September 7-9, Shidaa Cultural Troupe was crowned winners of the maiden edition of the Samsung Cultural Icon. The three-day celebrations which were held under theme, “Beautiful Ghana through the eyes of Samsung” also saw Charles Osei-Antwi winning the Samsung Facebook Photo Competition. The global consumer electronics manufacturer, Samsung held the celebrations to unveil its presence and entrench its position as a market leader in the telecommunications and electronics industry.

The Samsung Cultural Icon Competition began with 17 groups and soloists performing for judges, David Dontoh, Prof Nii Yartey, Tabitha Deh and Ameyaw Debrah, who trimmed the groups down to the Top 10 finalists. The finales saw performances from the 10 groups namely: Shidaa Cultural Troupe, Dromo Cultural Group, Ayeeko, Tsui Anaa, Heritage of Africa, Concerned Son of Mother Ghana, Nyomo Joo, Nyomo Ye, Tesa Cutural Group and Eshee Nyomo Feemo.

After the first round of competition which included creative routines around poetry, acting, dancing and singing the numbers were cut down to the final 5comprising Shidaa, Dromo, Herritage of Africa, Tsui Anaa and Ayeeko.  The 5 finalists gave a second round of performances and at the end of the event; Shidaa Cultural Troupe carried the day. They won 1000 ghc and a free Samsung phone for each member of the group. In second place was Dromo Cultural Group, which won 500ghc and a hamper from Samsung. Third place winners, Ayekoo also won 300ghc and a hamper from Samsung.

The Samsung Facebook Competition was open to the public to submit pictures that portray ‘Beautiful Ghana’. Within the 10 days of the competition over 1,000 people joined on Facebook and over 700 pictures where submitted on various subjects ranging from food, national monuments, landscapes among others.  Ameyaw Debrah, Judge for the photo competition made a presentation on the completion at a Dinner Gala on Friday, September 9 where the winner, received his Prize. Charles Osei-Antwi won a Samsung digital camera. Samsung also presented awards to distributers and partners from all over Ghana during the gala. Guest of Honour for the gala was the Minister for Trade and Industry, Hanna Tetteh-Kpodar.
