Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority to invest GH₵36m in Philanthropic works in Ghana

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., a United States of America (USA) based, all women not for profit organization, championing charity services, scholarship, and gender equality, has earmarked about GH₵36 million for various humanitarian projects in its visit to Ghana.

The delegation, under the leadership of International, President Rasheeda S. Liberty, landed at Kotoka International Airport on Sunday morning (December 24, 2023) and received a colourful welcome amidst cultural display.

The leadership of the delegation of about 300 members are the first to arrive and are currently putting things together to ensure effective delivery of agenda.

In Ghana, the sorority will lead transformative philanthropic initiatives, constructing vital facilities like toilets and boreholes to bolster health and sanitation infrastructure. Rooted in an educational foundation, the sorority will enhance education by building and revamping labs, distributing school supplies, and supporting initiatives for women’s empowerment and healthcare. 

International President of Sigma Gamma, Rasheeda S. Liberty, addressing the media on arrival at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), in what she described as “Birthright Journey” highlighted that the organisation will engage in projects related to health, education, sanitation, and financial literacy in five out of the 16 regions of Ghana.

“We are thrilled to undertake ‘The Birthright Journey’ to Ghana, combining cultural exploration with impactful service projects and donations. We’re eager to connect with the vibrant communities in Ghana, leaving a positive imprint and fostering meaningful relationships. This journey is a testament to our commitment to global service and sisterhood,” she said.

She was optimistic that the delegation would leave a lasting imprint through the series of its philanthropic initiatives with a budgeted direct inflow of US$100,000.  Additionally, sorority foresees a substantial cash injection of GH₵36, million into the local economy through collaborations with local vendors and suppliers.

Beyond infrastructure, the delegation’s donations will extend to women’s rights, education, and socio-cultural justice. Furthermore, the organisation will also visit the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and other health facilities to pay the medical bills of several patients. It would also provide hygiene products.

Touching on the choice of Ghana as the preferred destination said: “The choice of Ghana for the philanthropic project is to underscore Ghana as a home for the sorority members due to the warm reception it has offered to those with African-American heritage. 

“This journey is a testament to our commitment to global service and sisterhood. We aim to contribute to women’s rights, health equity, STEM projects, and invest in sanitation and laboratories. This is our gift to the continent, and we are excited to do this,” he said.
