Smallgod on giving young musicians a chance

Parents sometimes don’t have enough patience for us growing up. Your mum starts shouting “If you can’t eat, go to sleep!,” or your dad’s screaming… so now I try to do things different. I try to give [artists] as much chance as they can, they need to develop, to get through.

Once I find a new artist where I feel like they have something, I give them as much a chance as I can. I give them time, a chance and keep pushing them. As long as they want to work, I’m willing to give them as much chance as they want.

Smallgod on getting Uncle Vinny for ‘2000’

I did that [song] with WES7AR 22 and Major League [DJz], then I still thought we hadn’t got there yet. I was still missing something, and that something was the South African language, the whole vibe, so I must have called Uncle Vinny!

You know Vinny is not an artist, he doesn’t sing, so I’m like “Yo Vinny I want you to do something.” He goes, “What?” “Yo, I want you to sing on my song.” He says “Yo I don’t sing! I don’t do that.” I’m like “Yo, all I need you to do is just pretend you’re in a club, with the mic in your hand, and do what you do.” He goes “Yo but it’s strange!” So I had to convince him.

It took two days of convincing! It wasn’t easy, I had to convince him – take him out, go drinking, come back, try again until he said “You know what, I’m going to try.” Then he tried and as you can hear, it turned out perfect.

Smallgod on global plans for next EP

I think I want to connect Africa and the Latin and the Caribbean worlds together now. I want to take the whole of Africa – sounds from South Africa, sounds from West Africa, sounds from East Africa, sounds from central Africa – take it then put the Latin and Caribbean artists on there. Also, collaborate with the artists from this side too with them. I think it will be perfect. It’ll happen, on the ‘Bridging The Gap’ EP.
