Helmed by Sundance and Cannes-winning writer, director and producer Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene), The Nest was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Screenplay and Best Sound Editing at this year’s Canadian Screen Awards, with The Hollywood Reporter calling it, “A hyper-nuanced study of marriage mind games… Lingers long after the final credits.”

George Boateng: Ghanaian Computer Scientist Launches Smartphone-Based Coding App, ‘SuaCode’

Published

on

In ensuring that learning how to code becomes much easier and fun, George Jojo Boateng, a Ghanaian computer scientist and social entrepreneur created SuaCode, a smartphone-based coding app. The app was launched on Google Play Store in January 2022, and has had some great reviews so far.

Boateng started SuaCode in 2017 as a graduate student at Dartmouth College, during Project iSWEST, an annual innovation bootcamp for high school students in Ghana organised by his education non-profit Nsesa Foundation. From 2018 to 2020, with four pilots, SuaCode had over 3,000 applicants from 69 countries, accepted over 1,000 students, with a 62% completion rate and alumni getting internships, jobs and studying computer science and engineering in top universities, including, Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth, and MIT.

In 2021, Boateng and cofounder Victor Kumbol improved on the idea and launched the startup, SuaCode.ai to transform SuaCode into a smartphone app, with the aim of teaching millions across Africa to code using smartphones and an AI teaching assistant, Kwame.

The SuaCode app enables users to learn how to code on their phone at anyplace, at anytime in a community of learners across the globe. Through Kwame, a bilingual AI Teaching assistant that Boateng built, the app presents lessons in English and French along with fun and hands-on coding exercises, quizzes and assignments. It also provides quick and accurate answers to students’ coding questions.

The app’s Automated Grading Software, AutoGrad, grades users’ assignments while checking for plagiarism and providing individualized feedback; and users receive a certificate of completion when they complete courses.

For his work on SuaCode.ai, George Boateng has been recognized by the MIT Technology Review as a Pioneer in the 2021 list of 35 Innovators under 35.

Currently pursuing his PhD in Applied Machine Learning at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, Boateng is also the President and co-founder of Nsesa Foundation, which aims at achieving the vision of creating an “Innovation Revolution” in Ghana. He was also, recently, appointed as a Visiting Researcher at the University of Cambridge’s Computer Science department, where he will be exploring collaborations on AI-powered mobile heath research.

Dating in Nairobi laid bare as Single Kiasi (Singleish) premieres, also available in 33 countries in the diaspora

Published

on

Single Kiasi (Singleish), the new Kenyan Showmax Original, is now streaming, with new episodes releasing every Thursday. The show will also be available to Kenyans in the UK, France and 31 other countries in the diaspora.

What does the pursuit for the one look like for 30-something women in Nairobi?

Sintamei (Gathoni Mutua) is trying to start a family with her loving husband Kevin (Lucarelli Onyango) while also building her career as a corporate lawyer.

Rebecca (Faith Kibathi) is all about motherhood, being a housewife and staying loyal to her “husband” Eric (Michael Munyoki), even though he doesn’t have a shilling to his name.

And Mariah (Minne Kariuki) is all about expensive gifts and traveling to the best destinations her rich sponsor’s money can buy, while chasing the next social media high and sharing slay queen dating tips with her many followers. “Paris was amazing. If your guy takes you to Dubai, please dump him,” she tells her fans while on a private jet from her vacation in France.

When we catch up with them in the first episode of Single Kiasi, they seem to have their lives and their romantic relationships under control. But dating in Nairobi can be hectic, and it doesn’t take long before the men of Single Kiasi prove the popular saying in the city’s dating scene: “Men will embarrass you unprovoked,” as reiterated by Mariah.

In the course of the 13 episodes, Single Kiasi follows Sintamei, Rebecca and Mariah as they go through the ups and downs of love and dating in Nairobi while also reminding us that, at the end of the day, friendship is the most powerful relationship they can have.

Single Kiasi is the second Showmax Original series in Kenya after the Kalasha-winning Crime and Justice.

The show is adapted from the popular South African series Unmarried, which already has successful adaptations in Nigeria (Unmarried Nigeria) and Ghana (To Have and To Have Hold).

“It’s a universal story of womanhood, love and friendship,” says producer and director Grace Kahaki. “But we had to make some changes here and there for the story to fit to who we are as Kenyans.”

For instance, Single Kiasi incorporates a Kikuyu traditional marriage ceremony (nguracio) in place of a church wedding.

“In the South African version, one of the leading women has an affair with a security guard but we felt that this wasn’t authentic to the Kenyan setting so changed the guard to an intern, which is more reflective of what happens here,” Kahaki says.

Single Kiasi tackles important issues that Kenyan women go through, such as sexism in the workplace like when Sintamei is passed over for a promotion that she clearly deserves, sexual assault like in the case of Mariah who is forced to confront a past she’d rather forget, and women (and mothers) finding their own identities outside of what society expects of them like Rebecca getting to relive her youth which she missed out on by marrying too young.

“This show aims to look at women through our three main characters and allow them to choose what label they want to attach to themselves, be it single, married, wife, career woman, mother, etc,” Kahaki says.

Kahaki co-produced and co-directed Single Kiasi alongside her Insignia Productions counterpart Philippe Bresson, and Robby Bresson (Simiyu Samurai).

Catch episode 1 of Single Kiasi, now streaming on Showmax, with new episodes releasing every Thursday.

2 BEST Ways to Make Money on YouTube in 2022

Published

on

Every creator wants to make money on YouTube. The key is to focus on the few initiatives that will be the most PROFITABLE for you. Below are 2 best ways to make money on YouTube.

1. Create sponsored content

The easiest way to make a living on YouTube is to create sponsored content.

We know creators who earn $5,000 per month from sponsored content and only have 10k viewers per video. Imagine that? With just 10k viewers/video these creators are earning $60,000 per year by selling 4 sponsors per week at $25 CPM (cpm means cost per 1k viewers).

Here is how creators sell sponsors. They have a 5 video minimum booking, so every sponsor pays $1,250 per deal at $250 per video ($25 CPM). The package they usually sell is a 60 second midroll ad and a 10 second endroll ad. Most creators sell sponsorships themselves via email part time.

Once creators have a fully working sales cycle, then they hire salespeople to sell for them. NO SALES ARE INBOUND. Every sale you have to find and close.

From your end, start reaching out via email to potential companies who seem like a good fit for your channel. We recommend selling to ecommerce and tech companies, but make sure they are MID LEVEL (less than 250 employees) and not too big. Smaller companies will be easier to close. You can find anybody’s email online and focus on contacting employees in charge of MARKETING.

In summary, we highly recommend doing sponsored content because you can make good money.

2. Sell YOUR products to viewers

The second good way to make money on YouTube is to sell YOUR products to viewers. This allows you to create lots of content and USE your products in the videos.

Some ideas for products you can sell include T-shirts, baseball caps, artwork, covid masks, socks, tote bags, mugs, hats, pens, and bandanas. Remember to make your products unique and don’t spread yourself too thin. Find the 1 product that fans LOVE TO BUY and put all focus on that item.

To get things started, set up your ecommerce website and create the product you want to sell. There are many online services that allow you to set up your website in 1 day. Don’t be embarrassed to show off your products. Many creators wish they started pushing their MERCH earlier in their career. This is a good way to make money.

We hope you enjoyed this blog.

Top Reasons to Visit Guam

Published

on

If you’re looking for a travel destination that feels simultaneously familiar and also exotic, Guam might be worth consideration. A lot of Americans move to Guam each year for work, and there is a significant military presence on the Pacific Island.

There’s a lot more to Guam than the military, however.

Guam is in the Western Pacific, a U.S. Island territory. Guam is the largest of what are known as the Mariana and Micronesian Islands, and it’s a good destination for all types of travelers, including families, couples, divers, and adventure lovers.

The following are some of the top things to know and reasons you might consider traveling to Guam.

The History

The history of the island and U.S. territory is one good reason to think about visiting. The history dates back to 2000 BC, a period of ancient Chamorro life.

There are more than 130 sites around the island on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Spanish era is where much of the history and culture comes from. However, the Americans and Japanese have also occupied Guam throughout history.

Today, the native Chamorro culture is what’s most celebrated on the island. The island’s original community of Chamorro natives has inhabited Guam for nearly 4,000 years.

Diving

Guam has a rich coral reef marine environment. In fact, you’ll find more than 400 types of coral and more than 1,000 species of fish. There’s a lot of well-maintained biodiversity, but you can also learn about the history of Guam under the surface of the water.

There are shipwrecks and submerged remnants of World Wars I and II off the shore. There are even sites that date back to the Spanish early trading days.

There are volcanoes and limestone forests in the south, so divers enjoy sloping reefs and drop-offs.

In the north are limestone caves and swim-throughs. The water is consistently clear and warm throughout the year.

As far as safety, Guam is considered one of the top diving destinations, and the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy patrol the waters.

Guam is the landmass closest to the Challenger Deep, the deepest point on Earth, although there aren’t expeditions available to tourists here.

Cuisine and Culture

Guam has some similarities to Hawaii, but with more influence from Southeast Asia. The culture and cuisine showcase the unique influences on the island throughout history.

As far as food, specialties on the island include hotnon babui, roasted pork, buenelos aga, banana donuts, and kelaguen, which is meat or seafood with lemon.

The culture is one rooted in celebration. The island people love to get together with one another, so there’s almost always something going on.

Village fiestas, for example, happen monthly.

There are also larger festivals like the Malesso Crab Festival, the Guam Micronesia Island Fair, and the Guam Live International Music Festival.

Guam is considered a melting pot, with incredibly hospitable people that love to talk and share.

Hiking

Even if you aren’t a diver, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy natural beauty, including as a hiker. They call it boonie stomp in Guam, and there are a number of waterfalls and mountains to explore. For example, LamLam is the highest peak on the island. You might also hike Marbo Cave, Waterfall Valley, and Tarzan Falls.

Two Lovers Point has beautiful views, especially at sunset, or you could head to Cetti Bay Overlook.

The Beaches

Even if you don’t want to dive below the water’s surface, you can still enjoy its beauty from the many beaches of Guam. You can surf, or just relax on the sand.

Sharks Cove Beach is one of the more rugged options off the beaten trail. There’s also Alupang Island, or you can relax in the shallow waters of Gun Beach. Surfers might go for the breaks of Talofofo Bay.

The beaches of Guam are often named as the best in the world, and no matter where you’re located, there will be one within 15 minutes of you.

Family-Friendly

As you might imagine from everything described above, Guam is family-friendly. So much of the culture of the island centers around family traditions and values. You can bring your kids to Guam, and there will inevitably be something to hold everyone’s attention.

Guam is definitely worth adding to your desired destination list if you want a unique place to go that also has some of the familiar elements you’re used to.
