The Original UnBraider Is Making Trends And Is Set For Release February 1st

The Original UnBraider is the culmination of innovation and “black girl magic” spearheaded by the minds of Natasha Anderson and Khadija Imara. With a growing social media presence and multiple notable celebrities co-signing that include the likes of entertainment personality Tamar Braxton, the product is building into a staple of regular life in the daily lives of society.

However, what does it do, and what makes the product special? The Original UnBraider is an artistically and durably designed innovative product used to unbraid hair. The comb has been engineered to take down 6 to 8 braids simultaneously. It serves two purposes, one to take down braids and two to comb out the unbraided hair simultaneously.

The mission of the product and brand is to revolutionize the beauty industry by designing black-owned hair care products for black people in a field where black women are the majority consumers but have minority ownership. Also, to Empower young women to be entrepreneurs. Teens and young adults can start their own take-down business, using The Original UnBraider, an affordable cornerstone of their business, finally to provide products and services curated explicitly for protective styles that hydrate and strengthen hair.

The overall mission and application of The Original UnBraider are second to none. The story of the two brilliant people behind it also makes the invention special. Natasha Anderson, Co-Owner and Founder, has a unique motivation behind the brand. Being a mother to five children and a Cal State Long Beach graduate, she had a vision In 2004, which was changing how beauticians, parents, and kids take down braids. The idea was to revolutionize the beauty industry by changing how we take down braids and provide opportunities for young women and empower the black community.

The beauty industry lacks black ownership, and The Original UnBriader is to show black people, specifically young black women, that we can be innovators and solve our communities’ problems through our creativity. Natasha and her family sold the product locally from mall kiosks and beauty salons in California. Unfortunately, the business initially slowed when Anderson’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and subsequently passed. Khadija Imara stepped up as CEO after their grandmother’s passing and focused on her passion for black women’s entrepreneurship.

Not only having an impressive educational background, University of California, Davis B.A. class of 2018, and a Master of Educational Technology from Boise State University in 2020, Khadija has a natural affinity for procuring an efficient business that helps transcend boundaries. Imara’s goal was to fulfill her mother’s original mission to change how people unbraid their hair. Khadija is focused on bringing The Original UnBraider to black homes and black-owned businesses around the globe and has become a staple in black homes, next to the hot comb and the bonnet.

Overall, the vision of Natasha and Khadija is to provide a product that will reduce the take-down time for braids and use the business to uplift and empower the black community. With a multitude of successful preorders and an upcoming release via Amazon.

6 out of 10 people reading this have never visited a dentist. Here is Why

Published

on

WOHD KV no QR

Good oral health is a vital aspect of a person’s overall health and wellbeing. Dr. Kami Hoss, a best-selling author and thought leader in dental health says that “Oral health is another essential piece of the puzzle when it comes to staying healthy”.

Ever had a nagging tooth ache that just won’t go away? Bleeding gums that leave your toothbrush red every time you brush or the overly sensitive teeth that give you trouble whenever you take anything hot or cold? Now imagine living the rest of your life this way.

These conditions could significantly affect your quality of life and wellbeing and may even impact your economic opportunities. But it would also mean that you would be suffering from largely preventable pain.

This is unfortunately the reality of many Ghanaians.

Despite the efforts to increase the number of trained dentists available in Ghana, the percentage of Ghanaians seeking dental care is alarmingly low.

Studies conducted in Ghana have shown that the availability and accessibility of dental services alone are not sufficient to motivate Ghanaians to visit the dentist. Experts from the Ghana Dental Association (GDA) continue to raise awareness on other barriers that may prevent Ghanaians from obtaining dental consultation and treatment.

According to the latest statistics, the most significant barrier to accessing dental care in Ghana is cost, as reported by an estimated 80% of Ghanaians. Due to the lack of information on the importance of the dentist and good oral care, many people avoid dentist visits in favour of other costs they deem more important. Statistics also show that 53% of Ghanaians have never visited a dentist because it’s too expensive and lack of access because of barriers like cost means that problems often go untreated leading to permanent loss of teeth. So, in the long run, the issue of cost can be curbed by visiting a dentist in the early stages of oral disease before cases become severe.

Another key barrier is the fear of dentists. By GDA standards, the level of dental fear among adults in Ghana is considered high. This fear may be attributed to the lack of education surrounding oral healthcare and the scary tales that those who have had painful experiences come back with from the dentist. People tend to have perceptions of the dentist’s office being a terrifying place and they cannot unlearn this fear until they are educated about the benefits of dentist visits and encouraged to visit dental clinics regularly.

The World Health Organisation recommends 1 dentist for every 7,500 people However, in Ghana there are fewer than 1(0.1) dentist per 10,000 people. Considering 43% of the Ghanaian population lives in rural areas, but 70% of dental professionals are concentrated in major towns and cities, Ghanaians located in rural areas continue to consider accessibility as a big challenge. Given this severe lack of access millions of people have never been to a dentist

Apart from cost, fear and availability of dental professionals, language has also proven to be a major barrier to accessing dental care in Ghana. Ghana has approximately 50 indigenous languages spanning the 16 regions of the country.   This means that there is still a substantial number of Ghanaians that do not speak English, the language most dental practitioners primarily use to communicate with their patients. This can create a wider gap between the dentist and patient because patients may misunderstand their diagnoses, treatment options and aftercare instructions. They may also feel misunderstood and may find the treatment they received to be inadequate.

To address the situation, a range of alternative approaches can be introduced, such as leveraging tele-health, subsidizing the cost of dental care and education and sensitization of Ghanaians on the need for regular dentals visits and prioritizing oral care to ensure general wellbeing.

Tele-dentistry involves providing real time dental consultations via digital and mobile means. It offers recipients of the service an opportunity to receive professional dental care and support to manage minor oral health concerns without having to go to a dental clinicGiven the limited availability and proximity of dental professionals, scaling up a Tele-dentistry program is a practical solution to bridging the urban-rural divide and making access to dental consultations much easier and more efficient, ultimately encouraging a larger proportion of the population to seek dental treatment and not wait until it is too late to see a dentist.

As Ghana get sets to mark World Oral Health Day, it is imperative for key stakeholders to join hands in addressing the many obstacles facing the Ghanaian populace in having access to good oral health care and systems.

Ghana’s leading oral care brand Pepsodent, is already playing a key role in partnership with the Ghana Dental Association, through its long-standing behaviour change program in schools and communities.

It is only by working together to educate people about the importance of oral health and making treatment more accessible and affordable, that we will improve oral health outcomes and overall wellbeing in Ghana.

Family

Evelyn Ashai Sam (nee Botchwey) is married to Mr. Robert Sam an HR Consultant and are blessed with four beautiful adult daughters. They have been her greatest inspiration and motivation to achieve all that she has accomplished in her career.

  1. How did you end up in your role as a Chief Supply Chain Officer?

My career in Supply Chain began in UK, where I gained valuable experience before moving on to work in Unilever Ghana for over a decade. In my role as Company Planning Manager, I was responsible for overseeing operations and ensuring the success of various projects.

In 2009, I was offered the position of General Manager of Supply Chain at MTN (Scancom Ltd), where I led a team to numerous achievements and awards until 2018.

After the merger of AirtelTigo, I was asked to join their Supply Chain Management team to share my knowledge and expertise gained over the years. I was eager to explore new opportunities and challenges outside of my previous company and joining as a direct report to the CEO was an added advantage.

  1. What do you think helped you get so far in your career?

My personality has played a significant role in my career success thus far. I possess a strong determination and perseverance, which allows me to overcome challenges and achieve my goals. Additionally, I prioritize continuous learning and growth, recognizing that it is essential to remain competitive and stay ahead in today’s rapidly changing business world.

  1. What do you see as the biggest barrier to embracing equity of women in the economy, especially in Technology/STEM (Science Technology. Engineering Mathematics) and what more needs to be done?

There are several challenges women face in their careers. One of the major challenges is the inequality in salaries compared to men in the same field. Another challenge is the scarcity of female role models who can guide and mentor them. Additionally, women have fewer opportunities compared to men, which is another obstacle they need to overcome.

  1. What is the most important message you want to send to young women thinking about their careers?

My advice to young women would be to approach their career choices thoughtfully. While the challenge and perceived remuneration are important factors, it’s equally crucial to find a career that one genuinely enjoys. Additionally, researching and understanding the culture of the company they wish to join is essential in making an informed decision.

  1. On the backdrop of 2023’s International Women’s Day theme “Embrace Equity”, do you think society is embracing equity? In your line of work, is equity something we are inching closer to?

In my opinion, there is still a lot of work to be done by society to ensure equity for all. This can include reevaluating maternity leave policies and exploring possibilities for dedicated areas to support breastfeeding mothers and after-school care.

Furthermore, it’s essential to set aside quotas for recruiting qualified women in various roles. Although we have made some progress in closing the gender gap, there’s still more that we can do to encourage young women to balance their personal and professional lives.

  1. At your level, what actions do you take towards gender equality in your workplace?

As part of my efforts to support and mentor young women, I provide coaching and counseling to help them realize their potential and understand that they can achieve anything they set their minds to. In addition to this, I pay close attention to their communication skills and how they carry themselves.

When I’m on the interview panel, I ensure that I give them equal and fair opportunities to showcase their skills and abilities. Moreover, I’m always eager to involve them in different projects and encourage them to speak up and share their ideas at various forums.

  1. What advice will you give women struggling in a male-dominated industry?

I would advise women to seek out female mentors at a senior level and to actively seek continuous guidance and support from them. It is also important for women to work closely with their male colleagues to learn from them on the job.

Additionally, I encourage women to always give their best in whatever they do, and to never settle for anything less than what they deserve. With dedication and hard work, they can achieve great things in their careers.

While I did not have female mentors, I had male mentors who provided me with guidance on public speaking, confidence, and core leadership skills, which played a significant role in my career. I strongly believe that women should support each other by sharing their experiences and offering encouragement on how to balance their personal and work lives.

  1. Do you feel you have achieved what you wanted to?

Having accomplished much in my career, I feel fulfilled and content with my professional journey thus far. As I near retirement, I am eager to share my knowledge and experience with younger women and offer them guidance in their own career paths. I believe that passing on lessons learned and providing support to the next generation of female leaders is crucial in advancing gender equity in the workplace.

  1. What positive changes have you seen regarding women in the workplace since you started your career?

I have noticed a trend of women venturing into fields that were previously male-dominated, such as IT and technology. Additionally, I have observed a growing sense of confidence among women in delivering presentations.

  1. What three values govern the way you live your life?

Integrity, Fairness and Godliness

The AirtelTigo International Women’s Day Profiling campaign spans over a month and is aimed at celebrating women in their respective workplaces. The campaign is designed to recognize and highlight the significant contributions made by women to the growth and success of the company. Through this campaign, AirtelTigo aims to promote gender equity and encourage women to strive for excellence in their careers. Overall, the campaign seeks to promote gender diversity and inclusivity in the workplace.
