Before I tell you why , lets take a trip down the memory lane to ascertain how many times we have ever encountered the term “women empowerment” or as I would rather say “women development”  ? I bet you do at least once a year, seeing that women empowerment is one of the longstanding movements for equality among human beings.

My next question for you would be; what has been your consistent reaction to concept?

This needs no answer considering that it is no news that millions of men and women around the world struggle to comprehend the aim and purpose of women empowerment. While men are completely turned off by the term , it appears some women are very careful to associate themselves with the term so as not to be called “ feminists” . Yes in most cultures and especially mine feminism is offensive and a feminist is seen as an outcast to the society.

This is understandably so, yes I can understand why because while I respect the laid down foundation of women connoisseurs and suffragettes, it seems that the pioneers of the movement had done more evil than good to the assertion because someway somehow at the sight and sound of women empowerment, people get  the impression of women taking over the world and shelving men into domestic or menial jobs .

And the phrase “ what a man can do, a women can do better” , a fallible and rushed logic became the phrase of the century. Women are never equal to men and men are certainly not equal to women but both sides of the gender coin are important and deserve access to equal ,favourable conditions and opportunities to realize the best versions of themselves. This is what women empowerment is about.

It is when a poor , vulnerable girl in my village Offinso Ahenkro gets access to education and becomes a nurse.

It is when a struggling female entrepreneur gets access to investment to expand the tentacles of her business into other countries.

When Ama Pomaa, a porter girl receives enlightenment of adding value to her work by shopping for people at their convenience, I believe we can all agree that she has been empowered.

Women empowerment is the belief that women Should have access to education, information , resources, association, voting and decision –making in matters that affect them. (Wikipedia,2016).
