University of Ghana Postpones 2024/2025 Academic Year Amid Ongoing Union Strikes
The University of Ghana has announced a delay in the start of the 2024/2025 academic year due to an ongoing strike involving multiple tertiary employee unions.
A statement released by the Office of the Registrar on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, confirmed this postponement, notifying students and stakeholders of the impact on the entire academic community. Despite the strike, the university has indicated that special programmes will continue as scheduled.
A revised start date for the general academic year will be provided once the situation is resolved. This postponement is a result of unresolved labor disputes between the university administration and several key unions, including the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG).
These unions have initiated an indefinite strike in response to longstanding demands for enhanced working conditions, which include issues such as delayed pension contributions, non-payment of vehicle maintenance allowances, and the suspension of certain previously agreed allowances.
