Vincent Kompany’s father becomes the first black mayor in Belgium

Pierre Kompany, father of Belgium and Manchester City player, Vincent Kompany has become the first black man to be elected mayor in Belgium.

Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the 71 years old mechanical engineer arrived in Belgium in 1975 as a refugee.

He became active in politics in 2006 as a councilor and took a seat in Brussels regional parliament in 2014.

After topping the poll for the municipality of Ganshoren in Brussels, he was declared mayor for the Brussels municipality.

Excited about the news, Vincent Kompany and his brother Francois, took to Instagram to celebrate their father on his historic election.

He wrote alongside the short clip: ‘History! We are so proud of you dad. Came over from the DR Congo, as a refugee, in 1975.

‘Now gained the trust of your local community becoming the first-ever black elected-mayor in Belgium! It was long overdue but it’s progress. Massive congrats!’
