Viva Riva 500 7391The biggest winner of the 2011 Africa Movie Academy Awards, Viva Riva continued its winning streak when it bagged the inaugural  Best African Movie award at the prestigious annual MTV Movie Awards ceremony. The 20th annual MTV Movie Awards aired live on the network on Sunday June 5 and was hosted by actor/comedian Jason Sudeikis at the Gibson Amphitheatre, in Universal City, California. The other nominees for the Best African Movie category were A Screaming Man (Chad), Life, Above All (South Africa) and Restless City (Nigeria).

The stylish adrenaline-fuelled crime thriller directed and written by Congolese film-maker, Djo Tunda wa Munga tells the breathless story of the rise and fall of Riva, a Congolese smuggler who makes a fortune overnight and is hunted down in Kinshasa, Viva Riva!

Riva is a small time operator who has just returned to his hometown of Kinshasa, Congo with a major score: a fortune in hijacked petrol. With wads of cash and all out for a good time, Riva is soon entranced by the beautiful nightclub siren Nora , the kept woman of a local gangster. Into the mix comes Riva’s Angolan crime lord ex-boss relentlessly seeking the return of a certain stolen shipment of gasoline. Director Djo Tunda Wa Munga’s Kinshasa is a seductively vibrant, lawless, fuel-starved sprawl of shantytowns, gated villas, bordellos and nightclubs and Riva is its perfect embodiment.
