Ghanaian artist Darkovibes, born Paul Nii Amu Andrew Darko, has shared the reasons behind his and other musicians’ use of marijuana, commonly referred to as ‘weed,’ prior to performances or during recording sessions.

In an interview on 3FM Drive with Giovani Caleb on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, Darkovibes stated that while he supports the use of weed, he refrains from carrying it in urban areas.

The Je M’appelle singer explained that marijuana helps to relax their minds, especially after long recording sessions or when preparing for lengthy concert performances. Darkovibes clarified that, even though he avoids carrying the substance in public, he willingly submits to searches by authorities, believing it is the right thing to do.

“We don’t walk around with stuff like that. It’s recreational. If we are singing and recording songs, we use it to cool our brains because sometimes we sing for the whole day, 24 or 48 hours. So, it’s just to cool the brain a bit.

“They search me. I even allow myself to be searched because if I have a gun or knife on me, they can arrest me, but I don’t walk around with that. It was in the past when I carried it and was arrested, and I said I’m an advocate, but that doesn’t mean we should misuse it,” he said.

Darkovibes is currently promoting his six-track EP titled Intercontinental, which includes songs like Wi-FiBend Your Knees, and Stage. He collaborates with Richkid and Fadlan on Bie Esor. He mentioned that the EP merges various cultures he has experienced, reflecting his global journey and work with different producers and artists.
