Wiyaala to speak at Cambridge University’s Africa Togetherness Conference

The “Lioness of Africa”, Wiyaala, will join a panel at Cambridge University to discuss Music and Film on Saturday, the 1st June 2019.

The topic for the panel discussion is dubbed: “Music, Film, Arts and Culture: Retelling African Stories.

The discussion will be a part of the sixth annual Africa Together Conference at Cambridge University.

Wiyaala will join Peter Ogbu Okwoche of the BBC and Yaba Badoe, a novelist for the panel discussion.

Wiyaala is a musician from Funsi, a village in the Upper West Region of Ghana. Her music is a fusion of West African folk songs and Afro-pop informed by traditional storytelling and enlivened with spectacular ancestral dance choreography.

Since being “spotted at BBC’s Global Beats in 2014, Wiyaala has emerged as one of Ghana’s leading international touring artists. She has performed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia, WOMAD UK and the Timitar Festival in Morocco. She was recognized as the “Most Promising Artist on The African Continent” at the 2014 All Africa Music Awards and as “Songwriter of The Year” at the 2015 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

Wiyaala also founded and organized the Djimba World Music Festival in Funsi, which is now in its third year. She is an influencer for UNICEF Ghana and campaigns for the abolition of FGM, Early Child Marriage and the rights of children.
