Nigeria’s brand new songstress, Yemi Alade is already making waves with her debut single, ‘Fimisile’. And with a guest appearance by non other than Nigerian hiphop great, eLDee, it is not surprising that the single is spreading with such intensity.
The young aspiring songstress is a student of the University of Lagos, was recently discovered after she won a talent hunt show. Since then, she has wowed out underground audiences and performed at select gatherings. According to her, music is something that comes as naturally to her as breathing; she says “I’ve been doing music since I was old enough to string a melody together.”
She started doing music professionally 5 years ago on the prodding of family and friends. She moved from just humming melodies with her daily chores to actually sitting to write songs from deep within her soul. She also believes that singing in the choir from the age of 12, helped her develop a method and structure to her singing as well as songwriting. “I don’t know what I’d be doing if I weren’t doing music. It is the very essence of my being” she comments with passion.
Yemi sees singing as her very own outlet for the urgent need to express herself. Her music tells stories about her personal experiences and that of people around her. Yemi recounts winning the ‘Peak Talent Show’ as her biggest milestone yet, describing the competition as an invigorating process that gave her the required impetus to pursue a career in music actively.
Although Yemi is an incredibly talented singer/songwriter, her debut afro-pop, ‘Fimisile’, was written and produced by eLDee. The music video was directed by Tom Robson for Jus’ Kiddin’ Productions, with all shots taken in Lagos. Check it out
