10 years on: Remembering Komla Afeke Dumor

A decade has passed since the untimely departure of Komla Afeke Dumor, a beacon in the world of journalism, whose legacy continues to inspire and resonate.

The famous Ghanaian journalist who worked for BBC World News and was the main presenter of its programme Focus on Africa, left an indelible mark on the global media landscape. 

Known for his charismatic on-screen presence and insightful reporting, Komla dumor brought a fresh perspective to international news, bridging the gap between African narratives and the rest of the world. His engaging storytelling and deep understanding of the issues facing the continent made him a respected voice, earning him accolades and a loyal following.

Beyond his professional achievements, Dumor was celebrated for his warmth and humanity. Colleagues remember him for his infectious laughter and unwavering commitment to journalistic integrity. 

The former Super Morning Show host on Accra-based Joy FM, who later joined the BBC, died on January 18, 2014, in London, in the United Kingdom from Cardiac arrest. His death, left a void in the hearts of many, but his impact lives on through the Komla Dumor Foundation, which seeks to empower young African journalists and promote excellence in the field.

As we reflect on the 10th anniversary of his passing, we remember Komla Afeke Dumor not only as a talented journalist but as a symbol of the power of storytelling to connect people and cultures. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Kwansema Dumor, his three children, and his father Prof. Ernest Dumor.
