Just because someone is getting up in age doesn’t mean they can’t live a full and fun life! There are many great activities that are low stress, low strain, but still offer fantastic benefits. Here are seven of the best low strain activitiesperfect for keeping older adults engaged.

Reading is a great hobby for people of any age. Aside from opening up amazing worlds and stories, reading keeps the brain heavily engaged while also reducing stress, improving mental clarity, and improving sleep.

Reading can be full fiction books, favorite magazines, or whatever. While actual reading paper copies does show better effects in studies compared to kindle and electronic formats, both are good.

And a good book club can help to share the fun while adding in regular socializing to look forward to.

  1. Enjoying The Great Outdoors

Time outside is good for mental health and is a huge mood booster. Even limited mobility doesn’t have to stop this. Taking some time in a handicap friendly park with paved paths, or even being out on an open porch for a while to enjoy the breeze, the smell of grass, the sound of birds.

There are hundreds of hobbies that don’t require heavy movement or mobility. You don’t need to be the 80 year old who started power weight lifting for the first time or started running marathons at 60. Bird watching, knitting, learning something new, putting together models, doing puzzles, or cooking are all examples where a minimal amount of activity or strain is needed to enjoy.

Whatever the person’s situation, they can find a hobby that fits their mobility, dexterity, and taste to come up with a great new way to enjoy their time by learning something new and mastering a skill.

Exercise doesn’t have to be like an old football practice or half marathon. There are plenty of exercises that can be done from a sitting position or with minimal movement standing. Water aerobics are a great example of a low stress solution to staying active.

Having visitors is great and if they include happy little kids or happy pets always happy to see new people, then that’s great. Showing up in a good mood and bringing a joyful attitude is a great way to light up a senior citizen’s day!
