Did Konadu Rawlings influence Lucky Mensah to sing against President Mills?

Judging by the much-publicized internal wrangling and power struggle within the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC); and a recent TV appearance by highlife singer Lucky Mensah, it appears that the singer was directly or indirectly  influenced by the former First Lady, Mrs Konadu Agyemang Rawlings to  ‘discredit’ the president in the singer’s controversial  latest single, ‘Enkoyie’.

Speaking to Deloris Frimpong-Manso on the ‘Delay’ TV show, the singer insisted that the song was not directed at President Atta Mills. He however stated out of the blue that he was grateful to the former First Lady, Konadu Agyemang Rawlings; adding that Mrs Rawlings was the one that paid for his ticket for recent trip to the US.

Prior to the 2008 general elections, Lucky Mensah composed a song, “Come to NDC” for the National Democratic Congress, then in opposition. So many people didn’t understand why he would turn around to do a song that easily lends itself as an attack against President Atta Mils.  However, bearing in mind that the former First Lady has subtly hinted that she may run for the flag bearer position of the NDC for the next presidential  election, it is open to interpretation whatever reason the musician had for making the song -whether it was out of gratitude or cleverly solicited!

The song and its music video paint a picture of Lucky Mensah going through hardships under an unbearable economy but he describes the song as a wake-up call to people at the helm of affairs in any given field of endeavour; calling on them to be responsible and dedicated to their work.

In the TV interview, Lucky Mensah distanced himself from politics saying he is a musician who is open to do business with all irrespective of political or business links. He therefore wished that Ghanaians would be able to make that distinction and not be politically blind to his music. He added that he had noticed a decline in the sales of his music since his ‘affiliation’ with the NDC in 2008 and hoped that Ghanaians would understand that is is just doing is job as a musician.
