My first day of Coachella happened to be Saturday although I arrived in Indio, California on Friday. Due to the time of my flight, I couldn’t get my passes on time to take part in the festivities on Friday, which included performances I really wanted to see such as Childish Gambino, Solange Knowles, Jayden Smith and a host of others.
Anyway I got up bright and early to go for my pass and later attended my first Coachella Party at the adidas Sport Club before finding my way to the festival grounds.
When I arrived, it was such as spectacular venue and after taking some time to familiarize myself; it was down to the core reason for attending the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival…the music!!!
I hopped around experiencing new and unfamiliar music from the likes of Billie Eilish who has been called the breakout star of Coachella. Tame Impala’s infamous confetti on a very windy night in Indio could not me missed as well.
Although I had not listened to Weezer’s music in a long time since, I first heard them on MTV Europe some many years ago. Seeming them on stage was a ride on the sweet music memory lane. They look older than I struggled to remember them! They did the barbershop quartet schtick to open their show. They played an hour of fun hits including “Pinkerton.” They also mashed up Green Day’s “Longview” into a cover of the Turtles’ “Happy Together” and also played “Africa.”
There was also some Southern California love at the festival today when El Monte’s The Red Pears played in the Sonora Tent.
I kicked off my treat of familiarities with Mr Eazi’s ‘Lagos to London’ set on the Coachella Main Stage. It was simply refreshing to see how he fit into the festival perfectly, representing Africa in his music and speeches on stage. He performed ‘I Surrender’ to my delight and that of the crowd and continued with songs like ‘Miss You Bad’, ‘Open & Close’, ‘Pour Me Water’, ‘Skin Tight’, and ‘She Loves Me’. He also did a special remix of ‘Leg Over’ and brought on stage a Haitian artist to sing ‘Akwaaba’ with him. I felt proud watching him on stage with Guilty Beats jockeying for him on top of the imposing ‘Lagos to London’ bus!
My first time watching Wiz Khalifa on stage live was very special, as I’ve doubted his abilities in the past. It was fantastic and the crowd reaction was special, and on a day such as 4/20 (one of the most widely celebrated cannabis holidays of all time), Wiz was literally god on the night, as were the many artists who promoted the smoking of weed during their performances. Even Mr Eazi paid tribute to the day with his reggae performance on the day.

Kanye West showed up to do some Kids See Ghosts stuff with Kid Cudi during the latter’s Sahara Tent set, ahead of his Sunday Service in the campground. And that was how I called it a night!

Saturday also featured standout moments like DMX performing on Murda Beatz’s set and Juice Wrld bringing out Future. I particularly enjoyed Juice’s tribute to dead music icons.
