The Playa de Palma on Majorca or the beach of Westerland on Sylt are undoubtedly beautiful and well-known beaches. But away from them, Europe has a lot more to offer in terms of sand and sea – and without the crowds.

  1. Mjelle in Norway

Going to Norway for a beach vacation? It’s actually rather atypical, but in the north of the country you’ll find a little idyll a few kilometers from the city of Bodø. Mjelle beach is one of the most beautiful in the whole country – because it contains gemstone particles, the sand shimmers slightly reddish in some places.

Nevertheless, the beach is not crowded. This is also due to the fact that the crystal clear water looks beautiful, but the sea so far north is quite cool even in high summer. If you want to warm up after a swim in the refreshing water, you can hike back to Bodø and get to know the beautiful nature of the region.

  1. Łeba Plaża in Poland

The waves break gently and clearly on the bright, fine sand that stretches along the Baltic Sea at Łeba to the horizon. Some bright clouds cover the otherwise blue sky. And yet this dream beach is not in Menorca, Sardinia or Crete – but in Poland. Only the screeching seagulls break up the almost perfect illusion – and of course the comparatively cool salt water on your feet.

Behind this largely natural beach, lush greenery grows unhindered. Where access to the beach is easy, vacationers park their bicycles in the dunes and enjoy a wonderful day on the beach on their towel. If you walk a few hundred meters further, you will always find a deserted spot, even in summer.

  1. Cala en Baster on Formentera

Hidden between high limestone cliffs in the east of Formentera lies a secluded stone beach in the bay of Cala en Baster. Surrounded by caves, exciting rock formations and lots of nature, you don’t have to expect tourist crowds here. The bay is also an insider tip for vacationers who like snorkeling. The easiest way to get to Cala en Baster is to take a short hike from the village of Sant Ferran de ses Roques.

Since the caves in the rocks there used to be used as boathouses, even today wooden constructions run along between the cliffs.

  1. Palanga Paplūdimys in Lithuania

“Pa langa” originally meant “swampy hole” in Lithuanian, but this beach is the smooth opposite. For more than ten kilometers, beach fans enjoy the light, powdery sand that leads shallowly into the Baltic Sea.

Those who visit the beach section directly at the place of the same name will also marvel at the pier and enjoy a freshly prepared meal with a sea view in the restaurants on the beach.

Once hunger is satisfied, a digestive walk along the seemingly endless, wide Baltic Sea beach is a good idea. If you are out early, you may even be lucky enough to find amber on the ground after a stormy day. Walks are also especially beautiful on balmy summer evenings, when the sun bathes the sky in romantic colors.

Crowds as on many of the popular Greek islands you do not have to fear on Karpathos as a rule. And this, although the small island between Crete and Rhodes can convince with some picturesque beaches. One of the most beautiful is Paralia Apella on the east coast of the island.

The beach is mostly natural and fantastically situated between high cliffs. Crystal clear turquoise water could make you think you are in the Caribbean – if it weren’t for the white pebble beach and the typical Greek vegetation.
